The Mavericks capped off their first weekend of Summit League play Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Oakland (Mich.) 7-0 and 7-4 at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
Senior Matt Tew (1-4) tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout in the opener. Tew threw four perfect innings to start the game, finishing with a season-high seven strikeouts and just one walk. Mike Carson tallied the only hit of the game for the Golden Grizzlies with a sharply-hit single through the left side to lead off the fifth.
Cory Buckley finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Brett Bass went 2-for-3 with two runs driven in. Ryan Keele also had a multi-hit effort at 2-for-4 with a run and Caleb Palensky went 1-for-2 with a run and two RBIs.
The loss went to Tim Koons (2-5), who surrendered six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk over 5.1 innings.
In game two, Cole Gruber led the UNO (10-15, 4-0 Summit League) offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and another two driven in. Bass also posted a trio of hits and two runs scored while freshman Alex Schultz was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The Mavericks also capitalized on four Oakland (7-20, 2-2 Summit League) errors.
Buckley (1-3) earned the win, surrendering three runs on 11 hits while striking out three over five innings. Lucas Scocchia (0-3) was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk over three innings.
