Storm Chasers Lose To New Orleans 5-1

Jake Smolinski drove in three runs and Doug Mathis pitched seven innings of two-hit, shutout ball to lead the Zephyrs to a 5-1 win over Omaha Sunday afternoon in New Orleans.

Paul Gran led off the third with a double and scored on Gil Velazquez's single. Kevin Kouzmanoff singled sending Velazquez to second. Ben Lasater was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bryan Petersen walked to force in a run and Smolinski's sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

New Orleans made it 5-0 in the fifth on Smolinski's two-run double.

The Storm Chasers avoided a shutout with a run in the ninth. Xavier Nady welcomed reliever Zach Phillips by singling to left. Anthony Seratelli singled and Chad Tracy walked to load the bases. Mitch Canham walked to force in Nady.

Mathis (2-4) struck out five and walked four. The loss went to Chaser starter Justin Marks (1-3), who threw five innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking three.
