Three Omaha pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts, but it was the Express coming away with a 3-1 win opening night in Round Rock.
The Express went ahead 2-0 in the third. Engel Beltre singled and stole second before Jurickson Profar walked. After Jim Aducci bunted the runners over, Aaron Cunningham’s sac fly scored Beltre. Mike Olt then doubled in Profar.
Willy Taveras scored from third for the Storm Chasers in the fifth on a force out to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Three errors in the seventh produced Round Rock’s third run. Beltre reached on an error by first baseman Xavier Nady and was later picked off first, but throwing errors by Nady and left fielder David Lough allowed Beltre to come around and score to make it 3-1.
Nick Tepesch (1-0) went five innings, giving up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Will Smith (0-1) also went five, charged with two runs on six hits, striking out 11 and walking two.
