The best high school hoopsters in the state begin in Lincoln, as the Girls State Basketball Tournament gets underway.
Class B’s Elkhorn South and Gretna tipped off the first game at 9 a.m. Morning games are played at the Devaney Center. Afternoon games are played at Pershing Auditorium.
For Elkhorn South, only in its second year of existence, going to state is a huge accomplishment said Head Coach Terry Graver. He said the school and the community have been a great source of support.
"There's signs everywhere. The cheerleaders put signs on our doors. So, it's really exciting," said sophomore varsity player Maddie Simmons. Simmons was the last to board the team’s bus to Lincoln at 6:45 a.m. Thursday.
"I'm kind of nervous, but mostly excited. I'm just ready to get out there and play. I think all my nerves will go away once we get on the court."
