Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne said coach Bo Pelini is "doing fine" after leaving Saturday's game against Arkansas State by ambulance after halftime.
Pelini fell ill during the first half and a member of the Nebraska medical staff was seen checking Pelini's pulse. He stayed on the sideline the rest of the half and was taken to the hospital after doctors treated him in the locker room at Memorial Stadium.
Pelini statement:
“Everything is fine. They ran some precautionary tests and everything checked out just fine. I plan to be back at work tomorrow. I’m proud of our team and coaching staff for the way they responded this afternoon.”
Osborne statement:
“As far as I know, all news on Bo (Pelini) is good. Precautionary tests. Word we've gotten back from the hospital is that he's doing fine. I guess you can never say anything absolutely conclusively, but it looks as though he's in good shape. I think that's what he'd want you guys to know. We expect him to be probably back at it pretty soon...That's about all I can tell you right now. It was strictly precautionary and so far everything has been just fine."
Osborne on Pelini's symptoms:
"We won't get into symptoms, but it was just enough to where they felt they needed to check him out. That was essentially what went on."
Osborne said after the Huskers' 42-13 win that initial reports from the hospital indicated Pelini was "doing fine" and that "it looks as though he's in pretty good shape."
Tests on the 44-year-old coach indicated he was fine and Pelini said he would return to work on Sunday. He was released from the hospital later Saturday afternoon.
Osborne declined to comment on the nature of Pelini's symptoms, saying it was serious enough that the medical staff thought Pelini needed to be checked out at the hospital as a precaution. ESPN reported Pelini was suffering from flu-like symptoms.
Defensive coordinator John Papuchis assumed the head coaching duties in the second half.
