Junior Federico Castagnini earned his second MVC Player of the Week nod on Monday, April 22. Castagnini is the first Bluejay to win the award twice in 2013 (also claimed it on April 8), the last Jay to do so in one season was Trever Adams in 2011 (March 14 & April 18).
Castagnini opened the week with a 2-for-5, four RBI effort to lead Creighton to a lopsided 12-4 win over Kansas. His two-run double in the fourth broke a 4-4 tie and opened the offensive floodgates for the Jays. Castagnini continued to hit throughout Creighton’s series with Southern Illinois, collecting six hits in an 11 at-bats. His sacrifice fly in the second inning on Saturday also proved to be the game-winning RBI. He closed the week 8-of-16 (.500) with seven RBI, four runs scored and a .563 slugging percentage.
Three other Bluejays have earned MVC Player of the Week plaudits this season, teammates Reagan Fowler (March 25), Jake Peter (March 18) and Alex Staehely (Feb. 18).
Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 23 as the Jays face the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa at 6:05 p.m.
