OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha women's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 56-37 exhibition win over Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
Paige Frauendorfer led the Mavs with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds. Junior college transfer Ericka House chipped in 11 points, and Oklahoma State transfer Carolyn Blair-Mobley added seven points and 13 rebounds in the victory.
The Mavs fought through a cold-shooting first half to stake a 28-16 lead at halftime. Omaha couldn't connect early on, missing a handful of shots close to the rim. UNO finished the first half shooting 10-of-28 (35.7 percent) from the floor, but hit 3-of-6 (50 percent) from long distance.
Fortunately, the Mavs' team defense was clicking, holding the Lopers to just 7-of-28 (25.0 percent) from the field in the first half. Seven different Mavs scored in the opening session.
UNO maintained a comfortable lead in the second half, never letting UNK get closer than nine points at 40-31 with 13:41 to play. But after a 9-0 run, the Mavs built the lead to 18 at 49-31 with 7:46 remaining. UNK ended its 7:22 scoring drought with a 3-pointer by Sarah Hix at 6:19 to cut the lead to 49-34. But the Mavs rebuild the lead to as large as 19 points, 56-37, with 35 seconds left.
Eleven of Frauendorfer's 16 boards came on the defensive end, as the Mavs posted a 47-35 rebounding advantage overall. UNO finished the game shooting 32.8 percent on 19-of-58, but held the Lopers to 24.1 percent on 14-of-58. House drained three 3-pointers to go toward her 11 points. Jamie Nash contributed eight points, nine assists and four steals. Taijhe Kelly also had eight points to go with three blocked shots.
Although the Mavs struggled from the field, they were good from the free-throw line, where they drained 14-of-16. Ivy Jones led UNK with 14 points.
The Mavericks begin the regular season on Monday, Nov. 12 against North Carolina A&T at 7 p.m. at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
