University of Nebraska Omaha head hockey coach Dean Blais announced today that three additional players have signed a national letter of intent to play for the Mavericks in the 2013-14 school year.
“We now have an incoming class of seven players, all of whom we think can contribute right away,” said Blais. “The National Collegiate Hockey Conference is going to be very competitive in its first year, and we think all of these players can help us succeed this year and in the years to come.”
The newest signees include a forward, a defenseman and a goaltender. Each is a product of the North American Hockey League, the United States Hockey League and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, respectively. They will join previously signed forwards Jono Davis, Jake Guentzel and Austin Ortega and defenseman Ian Brady on the Mavericks' roster this fall.
The following is a list of the incoming players sorted alphabetically by position:
Justin Parizek – Aberdeen (NAHL)
Height: 6-1; Weight: 195; Hometown: Lakeville, Minn.; DOB: May 6, 1992
Last season, Parizek served as team captain and finished second in team scoring for Aberdeen of the NAHL with 19 goals and 34 assists for 53 points and 93 penalty minutes. He led the team in assists and also tied for the team lead with six powerplay goals and four game winners. In 93 career games with Aberdeen, Parizek had 25 goals and 42 assists for 67 points and 130 penalty minutes and also had a goal and an assist in four career playoff games.
Preston Hodge – Sioux Falls/Dubuque (USHL)
Height: 5-11; Weight: 205; Hometown: Bloomington, Ill.; DOB: Feb. 21, 1992
Hodge split last season between Dubuque and Sioux Falls of the USHL, posting two goals and 11 assists for 13 points in 33 total games, seven with Dubuque and 26 with Sioux Falls. He also had 46 total penalty minutes. He played the previous season with Cedar Rapids, totaling two goals and eight assists for 10 points in 50 games and also had 96 penalty minutes. In addition, Hodge had a goal, an assist and eight penalty minutes in 12 career playoff games with Cedar Rapids (2) and Sioux Falls (10).
Reed Peters – Winkler (MJHL)
Height: 6-3; Weight: 180; Hometown: Morden, Manitoba; DOB: March 29, 1992
Peters played the 2012-13 season for Winkler of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League where he was the team's Rookie of the Year and its MVP. In 39 games, he posted a record of 17-19-0 with a 3.13 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage to go along with two shutouts. He also appeared in six playoff games for the Flyers, going 2-4-0 with a 2.12 GAA and a .939 save percentage. The previous season, Peters played with Fargo of the USHL, going 5-7-2 with a 3.20 GAA and a .887 save percentage in 15 games.
The Mavericks begin the 2013-14 regular season by hosting Bentley at the CenturyLink Center Omaha on Oct. 11-12.
