UNO slugged its way past Detroit for a 5-2 win Sunday morning to capture the UNCW Beach Blast title with a perfect 5-0 record at the weekend tournament in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The last time the Mavericks started a season 5-0 was in 2002.
Dana Elsasser improved to 3-0 and Campbell Ditto homered for the second time this season. Amber Lutmer added a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mavs crushed 12 home runs in the five games after hitting just 18 all of last season.
Ditto got UNO on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo shot. Detroit (1-4) rallied to take the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth off an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly.
But the Mavs came back. Tara Trede hit a one-out triple to center in the bottom of the fifth inning and with two outs, Lindsay Redding tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single up the middle to score Trede.
Ditto then singled, putting runners at the corners and Lutmer stepped up and swatted her fourth homer of the season to center to make it 5-2.
The three-run advantage was more than enough for Elsasser, who retired the Titans in order in the sixth and seventh to finish off her third win and second complete game this season.
Ditto was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Lutmer was 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs. Negrete was also 2-for-3. Elsasser allowed two earned runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
