Nebraska Omaha opened its weekend series at Oakland (Mich.) with a 9-6 win Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Todd Dunham was hit by a pitch, stole second and later scored on Mike Carson's sacrifice fly. UNO tied the game in the second with Clayton Taylor scoring on Caleb Palensky's single.
The Mavericks added four runs in the third. Alex Mortensen was hit by a pitch followed by a walk to Cory Buckley and both runners moved into scoring position on a bunt by Ryan Keele. Tyler Splichal then singled to score Mortensen and Buckley scored on Taylor's sac fly. Alex Schultz reached on an infield single and Palensky sent a triple down the right field line plating Splichal and Schultz to make it 5-1.
UNO made it 8-1 in the fifth. Splichal was hit by a pitch and Taylor singled through the right side. A one-out single from Palensky brought in Splichal and two batters later Brett Bass doubled in Palensky and Taylor.
After Oakland scored twice in the home fifth, the Mavericks came back with a run in the sixth as Connor Messinger came home on Taylor's sacrifice fly for a 9-3 lead.
Tyler Fox (5-2) got the win, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.0 innings with two strikeouts. Connor Mielock (1-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits while walking two over 3.0 innings.
