Justin Simmons and John Karhoff each scored 19 points and shot a combined 13-for-29 from the field, accounting for more than half the teams’ field goals, in a 71-60 Nebraska Omaha win over Western Illinois Saturday afternoon at Ralston Arena.
Simmons added three assists and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line while Karhoff finished with eight boards in 33 minutes.
Garret Covington paced Western Illinois (9-14, 3-5 Summit League) with a game-high 21 points, including four three-pointers, and six rebounds. Jabari Sandifer added 14 points and five rebounds for the Leathernecks.
The Mavericks (15-9, 4-4 Summit League) led at halftime 35-28 and maintained the lead until Covington hit a three-pointer with 10:57 to go to tie the score at 43-43. UNO roared back with its only three of the second half when Simmons sunk a deep three with 6:28 remaining to put Omaha ahead for good, 50-47. UNO extended the lead to 11, its largest of the game, at 69-58 with :38 left on a jam by Simmons.
