The latest Hobey Baker Award watch list for college hockey’s best player has a familiar name on top. Nebraska Omaha forward Ryan Walters is the mid-season favorite for hockey's Heisman Trophy.
Welcome to Wally's world. "As long as we have Walters scoring I think we will be fine,” says UNO captain Matt White.
Walters is in the middle of a career year, leading the NCAA with 13 goals and 33 points. “I think it has just been a really good team effort,” says Walters. “My linemates have been helping out, I could not have done it without them and I get a lot of support from the team. I think everything is just going right with hard work and getting some good bounces.”
“Ryan has been pretty consistent,” says Maverick head coach Dean Blais. “Maybe kind of a slow start for him, but obviously an All-American, Hobey Baker-type year for him.” Blais knows what he is talking about. Walters is number one on the latest Hobey Baker Award watch list for the best player in all of college hockey.
“It would feel great to be honored and mentioned in that kind of caliber of an award,” says Walters. “It would be awesome, but you just have to take it game by game and whatever happens, happens."
To get even more attention, Walters’ teammates started a hashtag for him, #wallyforhobey. “That is cool. I know a lot of guys started tweeting it to get that trending and I appreciate that the guys are there for me and I like that, it is fun.”
If Walters keeps scoring like he has been, he won't need the hashtag. His play will speak for itself.
