The Cubs jumped on Omaha starter Ryan Verdugo for eight runs (five earned) and nine hits (three home runs) in 4.2 innings on their way to a 10-6 win Sunday afternoon at Werner Park.
Logan Watkins led the game off with a triple, Ian Stewart walked and Ryan Sweeney homered for a quick 3-0 lead. Iowa added four more in the second. Alberto Gonzalez reached on a throwing error by shortstop Brandon Wood and Brett Jackson homered. Stewart again walked and would later take third on a Brent Lillibridge double. Brian Bogusevic then singled in Stewart and Lillibridge.
The Storm Chasers closed the gap to 7-2 in the fourth on Wood's two-run double with two outs, but Lillibridge homered to start the fifth and it was 8-2.
Xavier Nady and Adam Moore knocked solo shots in the sixth to get to within 8-4, but Iowa again pulled away with two in the seventh, one on Bogusevic's first homer of the season off reliever Dan Wheeler.
David Lough's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth closed out the scoring.
