Tyler Peyton scattered three hits over eight innings as Iowa defeated UNO 7-1 Sunday morning at Port Charlotte, Florida.
The Mavericks (0-3) used two hits and a steal of home to take a 1-0 lead in the third. Clayton Taylor doubled, moved to third on a Cole Gruber single and then stole home.
It was all Hawkeyes the rest of the way. They tied it in the fourth on singles by Jake Mangler, Taylor Zeutenhorst and Kris Goodman. Iowa grabbed the lead in the fifth inning when the Mavericks brought in Tyler Hamer from the bullpen to replace starter Mitch Larson (0-1). With two away, Eric Toole walked and stole second before Mangler followed with a walk and the pair moved up on a wild pitch. Zeutenhorst made it a 3-1 game with double to left-center.
That's all Peyton (1-0) would need as he retired Nebraska Omaha in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the sophomore's first career victory.
The Hawkeyes (6-1) padded the lead scoring twice in both the eighth and ninth innings. Nick Day hit a two-run single for a 5-1 lead and Goodman roped a two-run double for a 7-1 advantage.
