Iowa defeated UNO 4-1 Sunday afternoon in Wichita.
The Hawkeyes (8-7) broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the seventh. Anthony Torres and Nick Day knocked back-to-back singles and Torres scored when Eric Toole reached on a fielder's choice on his sacrifice bunt. Jake Yacinich singled to short and Keith Brand singled through the right side, allowing both Day and Toole to score for a 3-0 lead.
The Mavericks (3-8) came right back with a run in the eighth as Alex Schultz came home on Clayton Taylor's ground out. In the bottom of the eighth, Blake Hickman drew a lead-off walk and took third on Taylor Zeutenhorst's single, then came in when Torres grounded into a double play.
Matt Dermody (4-0) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits over 7.1 innings while striking out eight and allowing one walk. Steven Schoonover (1-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on six hits with one strikeout over 3.0 innings. Taylor Kaufman earned his first save of the season, holding the Mavericks to one hit over 1.2 innings of work.
