Tennessee has hired Butch Jones from Cincinnati as their next head football coach, putting to an end Internet reports that Nebraska's Bo Pelini was interested in the Volunteer's top job.

An unidentified source reportedly told the website Tennessee.rivals.com that Pelini had reached out to the university about its head coaching position. The rumor spread to Twitter and chat sites around the country.

Jones takes the job after passing on the Colorado coaching job and interviewing at Purdue in the past two weeks.

Jones has a 50-27 record in six seasons as a head coach. He went 27-13 in three seasons at Central Michigan and was 23-14 at Cincinnati the last three years.

Tennessee fired Derek Dooley last month after he went 15-21 in three seasons, including an 0-15 mark against Top 25 teams. Dooley was 4-19 in Southeastern Conference competition and had lost 14 of his past 15 league games.
