Old school meets new school. Nebraska has unveiled its throwback jerseys for Saturday’s Legends Weekend game against Northwestern at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The Huskers will honor one of the greatest teams in school history, the 1911-12 squad coached by E.O. “Jumbo” Stiehm that went 14-1 and won the Missouri Valley Conference title with an 8-0 record. They were 6-0 at home, winning five of those games by double figures.
The Huskers’ only loss that season was to Minnesota before going on a nine-game winning streak to close out the season, including a pair of victories over Kansas.
Stiehm, who also coached football at Nebraska, became the first coach in conference history to win both football and basketball titles in the same year.
The uniforms, created by Adidas, feature cream colored tops and bottoms with a white accent stripe and an "N" logo across the middle of the tops. One difference is the 1911-12 jerseys did not have numbers, so the number on Saturday’s throwbacks are below the stripe as well as on the back.
This is the second straight year that Nebraska has worn retro uniforms for Legends Weekend. The 2012-13 jersey was a throwback to the 1976-77 season, the Huskers’ first in the Devaney Center.
Nearly 50 former players, coaches and staff are returning to Lincoln for this weekend’s events that includes a private reception on Friday night and a chance to tour Nebraska’s basketball facilities and watch Saturday’s walk-through before the Huskers take on Northwestern at 4:05 p.m. The former players will be introduced during halftime.
