North Dakota scored three times in four minutes in the first period and freshman Zane Gothberg turned in a strong performance in goal in a 5-2 victory over Nebraska Omaha at TD Ameritrade Park Saturday night.

The opening face-off was delayed two-and-a-half hours because of poor ice conditions caused by the afternoon sun and the start of the second period was delayed because of a broken pipe that left a pool of coolant over the north goal crease.

North Dakota's early flurry started with Jordan Schmaltz's power play goal from inside the blue line. Nick Mattson scored next, sweeping in a rebound after Mav goalie John Faulkner turned aside Rocco Grimaldi's breakaway try. Mitch MacMillan banged in the third to end Faulkner's night less than 11 minutes into the game. With 52 career wins, Faulkner remains one win away from a school record. He saved only two of the five shots he faced.

Corban Knight scored in the last minute of the second period against Dayn Belfour to put North Dakota (16-8-6, 11-5-6) ahead 4-0.

The Mavericks (16-12-2, 12-9-2) got third period goals from Josh Archibald and Dominic Zombo before Danny Kristo's score iced the game for the Fighting Sioux.
