A recent graduate of the University of Nebraska-Omaha and the all-time winningest goaltender in Mavericks history, John Faulkner has been named Assistant Coach by the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the team announced Tuesday. Faulkner’s position with the Lancers is his first in the coaching ranks at any level.
“John’s accomplishments during his playing career speak for themselves and his ties to the hockey community in Omaha are obvious,” said Lancers Head Coach and General manager Brian Kaufman, “We were looking for an everyday presence to work with our goalies and in John, we’ve found a perfect fit.”
A native of Sarnia, Ontario, Faulkner joins the Lancers immediately following his collegiate career at UNO, where he finished ranked second in program history in games played (116), minutes played (6,324:18), saves (2,595) and shutouts (6), ranked third in all-time goals-against average (2.73) and ranked sixth in UNO history in career save percentage (.900).
“I’m extremely excited about this opportunity to join the Lancers,” said Faulkner Tuesday, “To have the chance to contribute to an organization as storied as this one and continue to work in this great community is unbelievable and I can’t wait to get started.”
Kaufman believes that Faulkner’s collegiate accomplishments and relative youth will earn him instant credibility with Lancers players. “John played at a very high level recently,” explained Kaufman, “Not long ago, he was right where our players aspire to be. With our coaching staff now set, our guys will have all the resources they need to succeed in the USHL.”
Faulkner joins the Lancers after completing his degree in business administration at UNO in 2012 and is currently working towards an additional degree in criminal justice.
