Doug McDermott A Finalist For Lute Olson Award

Creighton basketball standout Doug McDermott is among 25 finalists for the 2014 Lute Olson award, it was announced on Friday. The list of finalists comprise the 2013-14 Lute Olson All-America team, which is coordinated by CollegeInsider.com.

The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons with his respective team. Freshmen and first-year transfers can be named to the All-America team, but are not eligible to receive the Player of the Year honors.

"There is an awful lot of talent on this team," said CollegeInsider.com's Riley Wallace. "Every player on this list had a major impact on his team's success."

McDermott has the opportunity to become the first two-time winner of the award, which is now in its fifth year. Previous recipients include Shane Larkin (Miami 2013), Doug McDermott (2012), Kemba Walker (Connecticut 2011) and Sherron Collins (Kansas 2010).

McDermott leads the nation in scoring (26.7 ppg.) and points (934) while also ranking second in field goals made (330) and 11th in three-point percentage (.449) through games of March 27th. He scored a career-high 45 points on Senior Night on March 8th to become the eighth man in NCAA history to surpass 3,000 carer points, eventually finishing fifth all-time in scoring with 3,150 career points.

The award is named in honor of coaching great Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997.
