Denver Grinds Out 4-1 Win Over Mavericks

Denver picked up a win in its fourth try against the Omaha hockey team, winning 4-1 on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.

The Pioneers had lost the first three games to the Mavericks before earning the split of the weekend series. The Mavericks fell to 12-14-2 overall and 9-7-2-1 in the NCHC, putting them in third place. Denver improved to 14-10-6 overall and 8-7-3-2 in conference playing, putting it one point behind the Mavericks in fourth.

Denver weathered three early penalty kills and opened the scoring shortly thereafter. Nolan Zajac scooped up the rebound of a shot by Zac Larazza and popped the puck over Kirk Thompson’s pad at 15:55 of the first period.

The Mavericks tied the game early in the second period during a penalty kill. Nick Seeler stole the puck from DU’s Emil Romig at center ice and raced in on DU goalie Evan Cowley. Seeler fired a quick shot over Cowley’s shoulder for UNO’s third shorthanded goal of the year.

DU retook the lead late in the period when Daniel Doremus’ centering pass hit the back of the net and bounced up in the air. Trevor Moore batted it out of the air and into the UNO net from a sharp angle to put the Pioneers up 2-1 after two.

Matt Marcinew gave the DU a 3-1 lead when he scored off the rebound of a shot by Larkin Jacobson at 4:41, and Josiah Didier added an empty-net goal with 1:10 remaining to ice the game.

Thompson stopped 15 shots in the loss while fellow freshman Cowley, a surprise starter in net for Denver, stopped 33 shots for his first collegiate win.
