A former University of Iowa women's rowing recruit is alleging that the team's demanding workouts were so poorly supervised that she developed a rare and painful condition in her legs caused by excessive exercise.

Margaret Krusing's lawsuit has received little public attention, but records show the former coxswain's injury has long been a concern to university officials.

The school agreed to pay Krusing's scholarship for two years after she left the team and transferred in 2009. A university memo shows the women's rowing coach was also directed to take several steps to prevent injuries.

Trial is scheduled for next week, but a court official said Wednesday it'll likely be delayed.

A spokesman says Iowa will defend against allegations that athletic officials' negligence contributed to Krusing's development of exertional compartment syndrome.
