OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton will host two games against Big Ten competition for the first time since 1939 as part of a challenging 12-game slate of non-conference games released this afternoon on the school’s Twitter site (@gocreighton). In addition to December home games against both Nebraska and Northwestern, Greg McDermott’s Bluejays will play against Iowa in Des Moines as well as true road games against UAB, San Diego State, Saint Joseph’s and Tulsa in preparation for Missouri Valley Conference play.
After an exhibition game on Nov. 6 against Rockhurst, Creighton will open the season on Nov. 11 when North Carolina A&T comes to town. Two days later (Nov. 13), Chicago State makes its first trek to newly-renamed CenturyLink Center Omaha. Both games, along with the Nov. 20 game vs. Iowa in Des Moines and a Nov. 25 home game vs. Campbell are part of the Dale Howard Classic.
Creighton’s first two road tests come against NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a year ago, UAB (Nov. 16) and San Diego State (Nov. 30). Both teams won regular-season titles last season in Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference, respectively.
Creighton opens December with a Dec. 4 home game against in-state rival Nebraska. Creighton has won seven straight regular-season home meetings against the Cornhuskers dating to 1997. The Jays hit the road six days later while returning a trip to Philadelphia, Pa., taking on Saint Joseph’s on Dec. 10.
After a week off for final exams, Creighton hosts Houston Baptist on Dec. 17 and visits Tulsa on Dec. 19 before finishing its pre-holiday slate with a Dec. 22 home game vs. Northwestern.
The Northwestern and Nebraska home games will mark the first time since 1939 that Creighton will host two games against Big Ten foes in the same season, and the first time since 1936 that the Jays have hosted different Big Ten teams in the same season. In fact, Creighton has hosted just one Big Ten team since 1973 (Iowa in 1999) before this busy December.
Creighton is also expected to host a BracketBusters game in mid-February, with an opponent named to be named in late January.
The 18-game Missouri Valley Conference schedule is being worked on now and will be released in the next few weeks by the league office. Start times, as well as national, regional and local television packages will be set in the next eight weeks and be listed on the men’s basketball schedule page at http://www.gocreighton.com as those items become finalized.
Creighton’s finished last season with a 23-16 record and runner-up finish in the College Basketball Invitational. The Jays will return 10 lettermen and three starters in search of a 15th straight postseason.
