Creighton Men's Basketball Moves Up One Spot in Poll

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team moved up one spot to 12th in the USA Today coaches poll and 16th in the Associated Press rankings that were released on Monday.

Creighton has now been ranked in the top 17 by both groups in each of the first eight polls of the season, reaching as high as No. 11 four weeks ago in both. The Jays played just once last week, a 71-54 victory over Tulsa, to close out pre-MVC play with an 11-1 mark.

Statistically, Creighton ranks among the nation's top-15 in eight different categories. The Jays are fifth in three-point percentage (.418), eighth in field goal percentage (.509), 10th in three-pointers per game (8.9), 11th in win percentage (.917) and assist/turnover ratio (1.50), 12th in assists per game (17.3) and 14th in scoring margin (18.3).

Individually, Grant Gibbs is second in assist/turnover ratio (6.25) and 19h in assists per game (6.3), Doug McDermott is third in points per game (23.1), 51st in free-throw percentage (.873) and 55th in field goal percentage. In addition, Gregory Echenique ranks 73rd in double-doubles (3) and 99th in blocked shots per game (1.67).

Last, but not least, ESPN analyst Andy Katz also gave McDermott a nod as the clubhouse leader for National Player of the Year, writing "Since Thanksgiving no player has scored as many points (210) and averaged as many (26.3) as Creighton's Doug McDermott. Ladies and gentlemen, McDermott is your current favorite for national player of the year."

Creighton opens Missouri Valley Conference play next Saturday when it hosts Evansville in a 7:05 game at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
