Creighton Falls to Minnesota

The Creighton baseball team dropped a 10-5 contest to Minnesota on Friday, Feb. 21. Creighton fell to 0-4 to open 2014, while Minnesota moved to 4-0.

The Bluejays jumped out of the gates quicked as senior Brad McKewon reached on an infield single. Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald advanced McKewon to second with a sacrifice, then junior Jake Peter belted an RBI triple into right to give the Bluejays a 1-0 edge in the top of the first.

Creighton continued to pound Minnesota stateer Alec Crawford in the first as senior Mike Gerber plated Peter with a single to left. One out later junior Kevin Lamb drove home Gerber with a single up the middle. A passed ball sent Lamb to second and sophomore Brett Murray made it 4-1 with an RBI single to right.

Minnesota got on the board with a run in the second, but the Bluejays answered in the third as sophomore Reagan Fowler ripped a one-out double to left and scored on Murray's second RBI single of the afternoon.

The game remained 5-1 into the bottom of the fifth. During the frame three Bluejay pitchers yielded two singles and five walks to allow Minnesota to take a 7-5 lead.

The Golden Gophers tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth for the 10-5 final.

Creighton junior Max Ising suffered the loss (0-1) as he allowed two runs on one hit and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Minnesota's Tyler Hanson picked up the win (1-0), holding Creighton to just one hit in 2.1 innings of work.

McKewon, Murray and Fowler led Creighton with two hits each.
