CU Women Blast Drake 98-71

The Creighton women tied a record Saturday afternoon for most points scored under head coach Jim Flanery in a 98-71 win over Drake in Des Moines.

The Bulldogs (6-13, 2-7 MVC) set the pace in the opening minutes, jumping out to a 7-1 lead by the 18:14 mark. Creighton (16-4, 8-1 MVC) responded with five straight on a short jumper by Alyssa Kamphaus and a three-pointer from McKenzie Fujan to close to within a point at 7-6.

Down 13-8 moments later, the Bluejays took control with a 14-2 run over the next four minutes. Sarah Nelson got the Jays going with a turnaround jumper from the right. Following a missed layup by the Bulldogs, Ally Jensen drained a three to tie the game at 13-13.

Layups by Jordan Garrison, Alexis Akin-Otiko and Nelson sandwiched a Drake bucket to give the Jays a 19-15 edge with 13:56 to go in the first half. The ensuing Creighton possession saw Marissa Janning convert a traditional three-point play, pushing the Bluejay lead to 22-15.

Over the final 13 minutes of the opening period the Jays sank five more triples and took a 56-42 lead into the break. The 56-point outburst was the most points scored by the Jays in a half since putting up 59 points at Siena on March 22, 2003.

The Bluejays opened the second half on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 63-44 with 17:42 remaining. The Bulldogs delivered their last blow over the next three minutes, scoring 15 of the next 20 to get back to within single digits at 68-59.

CU pounded the ball inside to Nelson for a short jumper. Up 70-59, Janning put the game out of reach with three treys in 1:02 to vault Creighton to its largest lead at 79-59.

Janning led all scorers with 22 points while Nelson finished with 20. Fujan and Akin-Otiko also reached double-figures with 19 and 13 respectively.

Drake's Morgan Reid led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Kyndal Clark chipped in 13.

It was just the seventh time that a Flanery led team scored 90 points or more, equaling the 98 points scored by his team on January 18, 2003 in a 98-75 win over Evansville.
