St. GEORGE, Utah - Three unearned runs in the fifth led to the first loss of 2013 for the Creighton Baseball team as the Jays fell to BYU, 9-0, in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, March 1.
The loss dropped the Jays to 3-1 in 2013, while BYU moved to 6-5 overall.
Creighton missed a scoring opportunity in the opening frame as junior Federico Castagnini smacked a one-out double to right, then sophomore Jake Peter drew a five-pitch walk. Unfortunately junior Mike Gerber bounced into an inning-ending double play.
The Bluejays returned the favor in kind in the bottom half of the first as starter, junior Nick Musec, got out of a first and third jam via the pitcher's best friend a 5-4-3 double play.
The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the fifth when the Cougars took advantage of a two-out error to plate three unearned runs and take a 3-0 edge.
BYU tacked on three more runs in both the seventh and the eighth innings to claim the 9-0 win.
Cougar starter Desmond Poulson limited Creighton to just five hits over eight innings, recording six strikeouts and just one walk, to pick up the win (2-0).
Musec was a tough luck loser (0-1), allowing three unearned runs on five hits and one walk in 4.2 innings.
Five Jays finished with one hit, including doubles by Castagnini and senior Alex Staehely.
