Bulldogs Drub Mavericks, 8-2

Minnesota Duluth handed the Omaha hockey team its worst loss of the season, running away with an 8-2 win on Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.

Tony Cameranesi and Justin Crandall each scored two goals as the Bulldogs won their third straight game against the Mavericks this season.

Omaha dipped to 15-16-2 overall and 12-9-2-1 in the NCHC. In spite of the loss, the Mavericks clinched home ice advantage for the first round of the NCHC Playoffs because Western Michigan lost 2-0 at North Dakota on Friday.

UMD improved to 16-13-4 overall and 11-10-2-2.

Minnesota Duluth got on the board first when Cameranesi picked up the rebound of a shot by Willie Raskob and threw it past Ryan Massa at 6:17.

The Bulldogs doubled their lead during a five-on-three power play. Again, Cameranesi hit the twine, converting a pass from Kyle Osterberg at 9:50.

The Mavericks got a five-on-three of their own later in the period and converted when Dominic Zombo knocked in the rebound of a shot by Ian Brady for his career-best 15th goal of the season.

UMD stretched its lead to 3-1 just 54 seconds into the second when Caleb Herbert put home the rebound of a shot by Cal Decowski.

Dominic Toninato made it 4-1 when he scored on a shorthanded breakaway, but the Mavericks closed the gap just 1:05 later when Michael Young banked the puck in off the right post for a powerplay goal, his second goal in as many games.

The roof caved in for the Mavericks in the third as the Bulldogs scored four unanswered goals. Kyle Osterberg scored with the teams skating 4-on-4 at 3:35, and Crandall got the first of his two into an empty net at the 11-minute mark.

Cal Decowski scored on a power play at 16:04, and Crandall scored again just 23 seconds later to close the barrage.

Massa took the loss with five goals against on 28 shots. Reed Peters, working in relief made six saves and allowed two goals. Aaron Crandall stopped 22 for the win to improve to 4-0-0 all-time against the Mavericks.
