Creighton softball completed a three-game sweep of Northern Iowa with a 4-2 victory at the CU Sports Complex Saturday afternoon, putting the Bluejays atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings.
The Jays (19-9, 5-1 MVC) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a pair of UNI errors. Blake Ringle opened with a walk. Cassie Sharon came on to pinch run for Ringle before a UNI throwing error allowed Blair Lowe to reach base with one out. Kelsey Allender's single scored Sharon.
A double steal by Lowe and Allender produced an errant throw by the Panther catcher, allowing Lowe to score. A sacrifice fly by Ashley Frutos brought Allender home.
Northern Iowa (13-19, 3-4 MVC) got on the board in the bottom of the third. A two-out rally consisting of a pair of singles and a walk plated a run to make it 3-1 Creighton. UNI closed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth following a two-out solo home run from Gina Brown.
Creighton added an insurance run in the sixth. With two outs, Ellen Homan and Liz Dike hit back-to-back infield singles to put runners on the corners. A Panther error allowed Amy Baker to reach and score Homan.
Becca Changstrom recorded five strikeouts in the complete-game outing to improve to 13-4.
