Freshman Marissa Janning broke her own arena record with 29 points to lead Creighton to a 67-66 win over Drake Sunday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena.
Down 39-30 early in the second half, Janning took over with 23 of the Jays' 37 points in the period. Janning began the climb back with a 12-footer igniting a 9-2 Creighton (21-6, 13-3 MVC) run.
Following a Bulldog bucket, Ally Jensen delivered a pull-up jumper just inside the paint to make it 41-34. After a Drake turnover, Janning made one-of-two from the charity stripe, then Alexis Akin-Otiko connected on a layup. One more defensive stop led to a driving layup by Janning to pull the Jays to within two at 41-39 with 15:33 remaining.
After three straight by the Bulldogs extended the deficit to 44-39, Janning drilled a three-ball and tossed in another driving layup to knot the game at 44-44. The two teams battled back and forth over the next 10 minutes with Drake clinging to a 60-59 edge with 3:28 remaining.
Creighton seized control behind a 6-0 run, courtesy of a layup by Sarah Nelson and two buckets by Janning to take a 65-60 lead with 1:06 left. Moments later, Janning sealed the win with two free throws with :35 remaining.
Janning's 29 points was a career-high, eclipsing the D.J. Sokol Arena record for a Bluejay that she set with 26 points on February 14th. McKenzie Fujan posted 11 points and tied a career-high with six assists.
Drake (9-18, 4-12 MVC) got 18 points from Kyndal Clark and a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds by Morgan Reid.
