Creighton claimed its first-ever Big East title with a 7-6 win in 12 innings at Xavier Saturday afternoon.
The win closed out the regular season for the Bluejays, lifting Creighton to 30-16-1 overall and 14-4 in conference play. The Musketeers fell to 26-26 and 8-10 in the Big East.
Tied at 5-5 entering the 12th inning, Xavier called on Thursday starter Scott Klever (6-5). He limited Creighton to one run over eight innings on Thursday, but this time the Bluejays were ready. Jake Peter drew a four-pitch walk to open the frame and Mike Gerber sacrificed him to second. Reagan Fowler was walked intentionally and Daniel Woodrow battled to a full-count before ripping a single up the middle to score Peter. One out later, Nicky Lopez's single made it 7-5.
Mitch Elliot singled and scored on Joe Forney's double in the bottom of the 12th with one out, but Bryan Sova got the final two batters.
Nick Highberger (4-0) picked up the win for CU.
