When U.S. Senior Open Champion Kenny Perry walked up the 18th fairway at the Omaha Country Club, he was greeted by a huge ovation.
34,354 fans attended the final round, which is believed to be the largest turnout for a sporting event in Omaha. The final total attendance for the Senior Open was over 157,000 fans. The Senior Open Chairman Patrick Duffy was thrilled with the attendance mark.
Dufy said "It exceeded our expectations, it was a function of people coming back. The percentage of tickets that people used was very high."
Duffy is a member of Omaha Country Club and played collegiate golf at U-S-C. He got the Omaha community to support the event. Duffy helped raise $5.6 million from corporations, $2 million in ticket sales, and got help from 3,000 volunteers.
Duffy said " It was a great week for Omaha. We hit the ball out of the ballpark. A lot of work people put in and getting ready for this event. We also caught a break on the weather and have a great champion in Kenny Perry."
After the success of this year's U.S. Senior Open, many wonder whether Omaha will host another golf championship in the future..
Duffy said :"Well what I think we will do is let the dust settle and get some feedback from the membership and the community and sort it out."
