Athletes and Elders is a program started four years ago that matched up UNO athletic teams with local elder care facilities in the Omaha area.
From the start the program has been a hit with both groups. Friday was match day between the athletes and elders. The elders get companionship and they look forward to seeing their athletic friends compete.
Student-athletes say they get back more than they give and the Athletes and Elders program is one of the most anticipated events.
"We sat down and talked about the events we wanted to do this year and everyone wanted to do Athletes and Elders," said UNO's Carly Cator. "We love the interaction with everyone and you learn so much, we learned so much from the elders."
The program also lets some of the elders relive their athletic accomplishments. Phil Monaco is 93-years-old, but is also a three-time wrestling champion and has a Hall of Fame ring to prove it.
