Big 12 Media Days wrapped up Wednesday in Irving, Texas with new Kansas head coach Turner Gill speaking with reporters.

Gill not really used to all the media attention after spending the previous four seasons at the University of Buffalo. He said he wanted to get to know his new team and wanted to make sure they knew each other.

He asked questions like who was the most influential person in their lives and then had every player and coach stand up and answer. Will that matter on fourth-and-goal from the one in the closing seconds of a tight game? It can't hurt, the former Nebraska quarterback figures.

Gill's soft approach could be just what the Jayhawks need after eight years under Mark Mangino, who turned Kansas football into the kind of program the basketball team could be proud of.

But things came crashing down late last season. Mangino was accused of physically and verbally abusing players and others around the program. He denied everything, then resigned in December.

Gill led the Huskers to a 28-2 record and three straight Big Eight titles in three years as starting quarterback. He also started his coaching career in Lincoln as quarterbacks and receivers coach through 2004.
