A shootout goal by John Kemp lifted the Mavericks to a 3-2 victory over the St. Lawrence Saints in the second game of the Denver Cup Saturday afternoon.
Kemp snapped a hard wrist shot past St. Lawrence goalie Kain Tisi after the Mavs had been unsuccessful on their first two shots.
UNO led 2-1 in the third period, but St. Lawrence tied the game when a shot by Derek Keller ricocheted off the back of goalie John Faulkner and into the net on a power play.
The Mavericks (10-8-4) seized the first lead on their third power play of the game. Eddie DelGrosso kept the puck in at the left point and fed it across to Mark Bernier who wired a shot just inside the right post for his second goal of the year.
The Saints tied the game halfway through the second period when Kyle Flanagan knocked in the rebound of a shot by Mike McKenzie at 10:14.
Matt Ambroz finished off a netmouth scramble by knocking home a power play goal, his team-leading fifth, to make it 2-1 after two.
