Eddie DelGrosso scored two goals leading UNO to a 4-2 over Western Michigan Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha.
The Mavericks earned their first two-game series sweep of the year after beating the Broncos 4-3 Friday night. The Mavs improved to 7-4-3 on the season and 4-4-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Leading 2-1 entering the third period, the Mavs surrendered a goal to Western Michigan’s Ian Slater just :13 in to tie the game.
Eric Olimb tapped in the puck off a netmouth scramble less than three minutes later to restore the Mavericks’ lead. DelGrosso added his second of the night on a pinpoint wrist shot during a late power play.
The Mavericks used the power play to seize a 1-0 lead in the first period. Matt Ambroz deflected a point shot by Olimb past goalie Jerry Kuhn for his third goal of the season.
Cam Watson tied the game for the Broncos in the second period when he converted a feed from Chris Clackson at 7:23.
DelGrosso put the Mavericks back up before the end of the second period when he redirected a pass from Terry Broadhurst over the shoulder of Kuhn to make it 2-1. Ryan Kretzer also assisted, one of his two assists on the night.
John Faulkner got little work in the UNO net as the Mavericks allowed Western Michigan just 10 shots on goal. He made eight saves to improve to 5-3-2 on the season.
