UNO placed five players on the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association first team announced Tuesday.

The Mavericks had the second-most first team selections behind league champion Northwest Missouri State, which had nine.

True freshman Levi Terrell was named the MIAA’s Freshman of the Year in addition to his Offensive First Team selection. In just seven games this season, Terrell ran away with the league’s rushing title, amassing 1,098 yards on 207 carries and averaging 156.9 yards/game.

He averaged 42 yards more per game than the next leading rusher. The native of DeSoto, Missouri also led all players in attempts and all-purpose yards (165.4/gm) and finished in a tie for sixth with seven rushing touchdowns.

Three others Mavericks were named to the Offensive First Team. Junior tight end Mike Higgins, junior offensive lineman Harrison Lingenfelter and junior placekicker Greg Zuerlein also made the team. For Zuerlein, it was his second time on the MIAA’s first team. Senior Zac Keller was named to the Defensive First Team.

Higgins led the Mavericks with 43 catches for 770 yards and nine touchdowns, all career highs. He was fourth in the MIAA in receptions in league games (8) and fourth in reception yardage per game (72.8). The native of Pickrell, Nebraska also ranked in the top 10 in the league in receptions per game, yards per catch and total receptions.

Lingenfelter, a native of Plainview, Nebraska, helped anchor an offensive line that allowed a league-low 10 sacks. The Mavericks ranked third in the MIAA in total offense (448.9 yds/gm), second in rushing offense (189.7 yds/gm) and fourth in passing offense (259.2 yds/gm). UNO led the league in first downs (205) and time of possession (33:57).

Zuerlein led the Mavericks in scoring with 78 points, hitting 13-of-18 field goals and 39-of-43 points after touchdown. He finished third in the MIAA in kick scoring, averaging 7.6 points per game. The Lincoln native finished the season with 27 touchbacks, just five fewer than all other MIAA kickers combined.

Keller finished the season as the Mavericks’ second leading tackler with 63 including seven-and-a-half for a loss. He was second with 30 solo tackles. The native of Kearney registered three-and-a-half sacks, one fumble recovery and a blocked kick.

He led a UNO defense that finished third in total defense with 370.6 yards allowed per game and ranked first in opponent third down (32.2%) and fourth down (21.4%) conversions.

The Mavericks placed two players on the All-MIAA Second Team. Junior offensive lineman Dennis Berglund was named to the offensive team while junior linebacker Bobby Stroup was named to the defensive team.

In addition, senior quarterback Greg Wunderlich, senior defensive lineman Ben Vanderslice, sophomore defensive lineman Nate Wissink and senior defensive back Jason Zabka earned Honorable Mention.
