Osborne Ranked Among 50 Greatest Coaches Ever
Husker coach places 34th on list compiled by The Sporting News Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne is 34th on a list of the 50 greatest coaches of all-time, compiled by The Sporting News.

Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne is 34th on a list of the 50 greatest coaches of all-time, compiled by The Sporting News.
The coaches were selected by a panel of 118 Hall of Famers, championship coaches and other experts. The feature is part of the new Sporting News Magazine, which hits newsstands this week.
Osborne, who led the Huskers to three national championships, received the eighth-most votes among college football coaches, trailing No. 3 Bear Bryant, No 10 Knute Rockne, No. 13 Joe Paterno, No. 23 Eddie Robinson, No. 24 Bobby Bowden, No. 27 Woody Hayes and No. 29 Bud Wilkinson.
UCLA basketball coach John Wooden was ranked first, picking up 57 first-place votes from SN’s panel, which includes seven World Series-winning managers, four Super Bowl champion coaches and the winningest coaches in the NBA, NHL and college basketball.
Panelists included Scotty Bowman, Larry Brown, Whitey Herzog, Tommy Lasorda, Marv Levy, Osborne, Don Shula, Steve Spurrier, Bob Stoops, Pat Summitt, Barry Switzer, Lenny Wilkens and Roy Williams.
Wooden won a record 10 Division I men’s basketball championships in 12 years, including an unprecedented seven straight from 1967-73. The first man enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and coach, he was named The Sporting News’ 1970 Sportsman of the Year.
Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi came in second place. Rounding out the top 10 are: 3. Bear Bryant (college football), 4. Phil Jackson (NBA), 5. Don Shula (NFL), 6. Red Auerbach (NBA), 7.
