Nebraska sophomore Megan Wheatley won back-to-back Big 12 heptathlons Saturday, amassing a personal best 5,800 points and finishing in the top two in all of the event's competitions in Lubbock, Texas.

Wheatley, No. 16 in the nation coming into the meet, is the fifth straight Husker to win the conference title in the event. Her score Saturday could move up to No. 3 in the nation. "It's a huge confidence builder for me. I'm very surprised with my score."

Second place in the heptathlon went to Missouri senior Kaela Rorvig (5,372 points). Third place went to NU sophomore Rachel Butler (5,068 points).

The Australian finished second in the event's final competiton, completing the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 9.78. First place went to Colorado freshman Brianne Beemer who ran it in 2:17.40.

Beemer passed Wheatley going into the final curve and pulled away from her down the stretch. The temperature was cooler Saturday, about 45 degrees colder than Friday, and Wheatley likes warmer temperatures in which to compete.

"I didn't enjoy it, but I pushed through it the best I could. I ran as fast as I could so if someone can run faster, that's fine." The win earned Wheatley an automatic bid to the NCAA meet in June in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Kansas State's sophomore Moritz Cleve set a Big 12 meet record in the decathlon, finishing with 8,004 overall points. The German, who came from behind to beat freshman teammate Mantas Silkauskas, set personal records in eight of the event's 10 competitions. His performance beat the 7,804 points by Texas' Aaron Fox in 1997.

Cleve overtook Silkauskas when he won the discuss with a throw of 134 feet, 7 inches. The chilly and wet weather affected all the discus competitors, said Cleve, who held third place after four events Friday.

"I was one of the few guys who had good luck. I know that I'm a second day guy. I just put it all together (Saturday)."

Silkauskas, who led through the first six events, tossed it for 121 feet, 4 inches. Cleve hung on to his lead through the pole vault, javelin and placed second in the final event, running the 1,500-meter race in 4 minutes, 24.44 seconds. Texas Kenny Greaves won it in 4:23.44.

Cleve's points also were the second-highest this year. Oregon junior Ashton Eaton scored 8,091 points earlier this month at the PAC 10 outdoor championships.

The first leap for Oklahoma's Ti'Anca Mock was a charm, giving her first place in the long jump. The sophomore leaped 21 feet, 2 inches on her first go Saturday and then watched as her closest competitors worked to beat her.

Baylor junior DeAna Carter was in sixth place before her last attempt and grabbed second place when she jumped 21 feet, 1 1/2. Third place went to Nebraska junior Leandra McGruder with a final attempt jump of 20 feet, 10 inches.

Short and middle distance preliminaries were run Saturday night. The finals are scheduled for Sunday evening.
