All-Big 12 defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh announced Monday he'll return to Nebraska for his senior season.

"After discussing the issue with my family and my coaches, I know that coming back to Nebraska is the right thing for me," Suh said in a statement released by the university.

"First, you can't put a price on graduating from college and I will leave here with my degree. Second, I have learned so much in the past year from coach Pelini and his staff and I look forward to another year of development at Nebraska."

"I do have aspirations of playing in the National Football League, but the best way for me to enhance my chances of having a successful pro career is to spend another season at the collegiate level. I look forward to helping Nebraska continue to take steps toward returning to the elite of college football in 2009."

Suh led Nebraska in tackles (76), tackles for loss (19), sacks (7.5) and interceptions (2, running back both for touchdowns) in 2008 and was a first-team All-Big 12 pick. He was the first defensive lineman to lead the team in tackles since 1973 and his 76 tackles are the second-most by a Husker defensive lineman in 35 seasons.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder from Portland, Oregon saw his NFL stock rise in the 26-21 Gator Bowl win over Clemson. He made eight tackles, including four behind the line of scrimmage, had two sacks and blocked a field goal.

Suh's return gives the Nebraska defense seven returning starters for 2009. He will anchor the line at nose tackle. Jared Crick will be among the candidates to join him inside. The Huskers have experienced defensive ends in Pierre Allen, Shukree Barfield and Barry Turner, who'll be coming back from an injury.

Corn, he probably meant $1 Million because Suh would be more likely to go in the 2nd or 3rd round. However, for anyone saying education first, let's say that he gets out of college and lands a job that pays $35,000 per year (which in this economy would be a pretty good job to get right out of college). Even with annual raises, it would take 20 years for him to get his first million dollars. Or, he could make it the first year out of college by going to the NFL. I think if he gets hurt, he definitely made the wrong choice.

Steve – What would you rather have? $8,000,000 or $51,000,000? That was the difference in last years draft for the #5 pick who was the 1st D-lineman to get drafted, and the 29th pick who was the last D-lineman to go in the 1st round. There are insurance policies that will cover Suh, so even if he does get hurt he will still get a huge sum of money. I would say the upside of coming back far outweighs the downside. And I actually have what are called facts to back that up, not just throwing out a number and bashing Husker fans. Unless by $1,000,000 you meant $8,000,000 and by accolades from moronic Husker fans you meant could be worth up to $51,000,000. Don’t even have to get all 5 years old on you and call you a moron. Your brilliant comment has already done that for me.

FYI to TopDawg & Steve: He can't play football forever, so he needs his degree for life after football. Countless former NFL players who leave football struggle because they weren't star-caliber for endorsements and appearances and the like, so they have no way to earn a living once their playing days are over. Education FIRST.

What an idiot. The downside of coming back far outweighs the upside. What would you rather have? A $1,000,000 or accolades from moronic husker fans?

"House of Spears" will be back...You better believe coaches and quarterbacks around the Big 12 are not looking forward to this!!!

That is great news! GO BIG RED!!!

I would rather have a 9-4 team with no one drafted then a 5-7 team with some. Just shows how well this staff coached, and how well they got the team to buy into the system.

WONDERFUL! And anonymous, I don't recall Suh being constantly flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct...that would have been the Florida Gators the other night. Get your teams straight.

Who cares if he gets his education? He could be earning millions of dollars playing football. Why do you go to college? To prepare for your career. His career is as a football player. If he's prepared, then he has all the education he needs. If he gets hurt his senior season, then sure, he'll have a degree, but it will pay him millions less than he would have made coming out early (potentially).

I'm a transplant here, so not a Husker fan, but I do watch the team. This is very good news for Nebraska. They are not near the top of the Big 12 in offense and won't be for a while, BUT they could work their way to being the best defensive team in the Big 12 and win games that way. He anchored the defense, and while he'll need some help, he could lead a pretty good defensive unit to the Big 12 North title, even while the offense loses some key members. The Big 12 turned a little into the WAC this year...they forgot that all you have to do is score more than the other team. No matter how much you score, it doesn't matter if you can't stop the other team from putting up more. NU could be the "odd team" in the Big 12 and that might lead to a couple of extra wins.

Greggy do you really think Zach Potter won't get drafted? That guy was a awsome player he was always blocking field goals and PAT's. He'll get drafted for sure.

Glad to hear that! He is a great asset to the team.

Awesome news to hear you are coming back Suh. Congradulations on your decision to go ahead and get your degree, and Boy are you fun to watch on the field.

Glad he decided to stay - and included getting his degree as a priority. This is one young man who has his head on straight and realizes the value of his education.

Posted by: Greggy on Jan 12, 2009 at 11:57 AM
Well, let's see.....that pretty much means Nebraska will have no players drafted this year

This is great news. Another season of numerous unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. At least Bo won't be alone.
