New Cyclones head coach Paul Rhoads announced Saturday the hiring of Tom Herman as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Herman will join Iowa State after serving as offensive coordinator at Rice for two seasons where he directed a program turnaround with his high-flying spread offense.

Rhoads says Herman will help with Texas recruiting and says Herman's explosive offense fits in well with his own vision for the Cyclones.

Herman previously coached at Division 1-AA teams Texas State and Sam Houston State, as well as a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Texas.

Rice won 10 games in 2008 behind its new offense and went to the school's first bowl game since 1954.
