The Colorado Buffaloes slammed the door on one of the worst Husker football seasons in decades with a 65-51 win over NU in Boulder on Friday. Nebraska's tumultuous 2007 campaign is over.

The Huskers were giving Colorado all they could handle until a string of turnovers in the third quarter turned the tide in favor of CU. The Buffs scored 41 points in the second half.

NU's mile-high collapse left the Huskers 5-7 on the season.

Cody Hawkins threw for 241 yards and Hugh Charles ran for 169 yards and three scores to lift the Buffs (6-6, 4-4 Big 12) to the break-even mark on an up-and-down season that includes a victory over Oklahoma and a loss to Iowa State.

As always, a blowout over Nebraska (5-7, 2-6) in this, the highest-scoring game in the history of the 66-game series, will be a highlight for Colorado. But as everybody knows by now, this year's Huskers are nothing like the old Big Red.

Next up at Nebraska -- that long-awaited meeting, scheduled for Saturday, between Callahan and interim athletic director Tom Osborne.

For a while, it didn't seem destined to end this way. Nebraska rolled through the first half. The Cornhuskers scored 73 points in their last game, a win over Kansas State, and led 35-24 at halftime of this one after piling up 393 yards against a Buffs defense that has had plenty of its own problems this year.

In the third quarter, some poor sideline management turned the game into another Big Red embarrassment.

Leading by 11 and facing third-and-2 from its own 19, Nebraska got nailed with consecutive 5-yard penalties -- once for illegal substitution and once for delay of game. That made it third-and-12, and on that play, Huskers quarterback Joe Ganz threw the ball straight to Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith, who returned it 31 yards for a touchdown.

On Nebraska's next offensive play, Ganz underthrew Nate Swift, who batted the ball in the air to be intercepted by Lionel Harris. Four plays later, Charles ran 7 yards to put Colorado ahead 44-35.

Nebraska's next drive ended in a blocked punt, which led to another CU touchdown, and suddenly a 10-point Nebraska lead had become a 16-point deficit.

Ganz threw another pick late in the fourth quarter -- this one batted up by receiver Maurice Purify, which led to a 51-yard interception return by Cha'pelle Brown and Charles' third score for a 58-35 lead.

That was 34 straight points, five straight touchdowns, and when the Buffs answered a garbage Nebraska touchdown with one of their own, they because the second team to hang 60 on the Huskers this month. Kansas beat Nebraska 76-39 three weeks ago.

For Colorado, this win will look good alongside that 62-36 blowout over Nebraska in 2001 that led to CU's last Big 12 title. This was the first time CU has cracked 60 since then.

Ganz finished with 484 yards passing for the Huskers and holds plenty of promise for whoever coaches him next year. Purify had 11 catches for 136 yards and three scores, but also had his share of drops and bobbles that cost the Huskers.

Of course, offense hasn't been Nebraska's problem this year.

The defense surrendered 518 yards, which was 45 yards above its average.

Ok, so now we get to pay Callahan 3.1 million, we pay Pederson 2.2 million, we pay Solich 2 million. Wow. What a rich state we are. Keep those tax dollars coming suckers.

Posted by: Joe Location: Omaha on Nov 24, 2007 at 10:45 AM
Bill is part of the problem with his complicated West Coast Offense. The tax me state is most of the problem. No coach can have a winning team without talent. When a state taxes families to the point they leave, they take talented kids with them.

Would somebody please tell me why, when these coaching contracts are drawn up...that if they don't perform, you do NOT get your $3million severence...shouldn't their be some type of "no gain no pay" clause?? Good Lord, imagine what the University could do with the money! This all starts with Steve P (loser!!)...and he STILL went to the bank!! Makes me sick!

What is the world coming to these days, the Huskers are not going to a bowl, Kansas is undefeated and will play for the national title, Hawaii is undefeated and who cares, Colorado is 6-6 and will play on New Years Eve and best of all for sure Cosgrove will be pumping gas next week. Enjoy Cosgrove you were terrible at Wisconsin you were worse at Nebraska, I ask you do you believe that we think for a minute that you actually try to do a good job? I wouldn't let you park my car! Have a nice time ruining some one elses defense.

Too bad this program has wasted millions on inept personnel. Maybe if they had spent the money on acadmeics my daughter would have average qauality professors. Go Big Red, who needs academics!! As a University, get your priorities right.

Is Bill C. going to care if he goes or not? He's getting his millions and don't have to work any more. And the same for Steve P laughing all the way to the bank and will be happy to not to work either. In our schmuck jobs why don't we all get paid millions to get the boot?

Husker fans, you really have to look at the numbers that Ganz is putting up! The Husker offense is NOT the problem! It's the defense! Granted Callahan is the HEAD coach but it's not his boys putting up BAD numbers, it's Cosgrove's boys. People were calling for Mark Richt job at Georgia a couple of years ago b/c he wasn't winning enough. Instead of firing him the kept him as the head coach and brought in an offensive coordinator. Look where they are now a top 10 in the nation. I think we need to clean house on the DEFENSIVE side of the coaching staff. People say things can't get any worse??????? Guess what Husker nation we could actually be like Notre Dame next year if we get fire happy! Keep it all in perspective!

I'm not what you would call your "die hard" Husker Fan. But I do live in Nebraska so I do keep up with whats going on with the Huskers. But what is more confusing than how the season has turned out for Nebraska is the people that take the time to post weekly their hated towards the Huskers and the fans. It is very obvious they DO not have a very happy or constuctive life. I dont know.... maybe they are "emoitionally or mentally challanged" some how. But most of the comments do seem to come from across the river, that may explain more than we care to know...... Get a LIFE !!!!!

Posted by: huskerfan Location: Topeka on Nov 23, 2007 at 07:43 PM
How can anyone look at this team and not place the blame on coaching - pure and simple. The coaches could say that they had inferior athletes - who signed them? The field house janitor? The coaches could say that the players made too many mistakes - who didn't teach them to be disciplined and play their position? The coaches could say that the players just gave up - who's job is it to give them the encouragement to not give up? Gee, have I heard Callahan (and especially Cosgrove!) hint that perhaps they are the problem and not the kids playing? Tick ... Tick ... Tick ... TIMES UP!!! Thanks for playing! You are OUTTA HERE! Don't let the door hit you in the a** on the way out!

Posted by: Tim Location: Iowa on Nov 23, 2007 at 07:42 PM
To all of you Husker Fans or so called fans, I have never seen more pathetic fans in my life. You people act like you have a pro team. These are kids (18-22) and you're blaming everything on one head coach. Somebody along the way forgot about a guy named Steve Pederson, who called the shots. So live with what they hired and shut up. If you want a pro team move to KC or Denver if they'll even welcome you.

Posted by: Beth Location: Iowa on Nov 23, 2007 at 07:37 PM
Nebraska fans, Have you forgotten, Steve Pederson programmed those boys. Callahan did nothing but follow orders. So get over it and stand behind your team like you Nebraska fans claim to do. P.S. Love them Buffs!

Posted by: :p Location: earth on Nov 23, 2007 at 07:02 PM
Wow, people are so vicious...it is just a game, why when a team has a horrible year people verbally brutalize the team, coach, etc? The players are kids who are going to collage and like to play football. I am not a peace loving humanitarianism, that loves everyone but I save my anger and lash out to ones that effect my life in a bad way, not a damn football team! GET A LIFE!!!

How bad was Joe Ganz hurt before the half. He held his right side for about three minutes after his second TD. He threw behind many receives in the second half and appeared only to jog(except in the last three minutes). Who was Joe's backup QBs today? Hope he wasn't playing with fractured ribs.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 23, 2007 at 06:47 PM
I'm tired of all this lame talk about Callahans offense is great and he's a mastermind...he's the HEAD coach...which means he heads up the offense and the defense...he can't hide behind this tree of his "west coast offense is working"...he must be accountable for both ends...this is a disaster what has happened this season...and who is to blame? It's Bill Callahan...he has to take full responsibility...he could have made changes on the defensive side...why didn't he...thats all I want to know...it's a simple question...it is his responsibility...don't forget that you that want him to stay...our defense is pathetic...pathetically coached I should say...not Cosgroves fault...Callahans fault. There...now I feel better. :)

Too bad Tom Osborne won't have the opportunity to fire Callahan. He will resign before the meeting and take his defensive coaches with him. Out with the "West Coast Offense" and bring in the "Wing T".

The game has been over for a few hours now...when is TO supposed to announce Callahan's termination???

Posted by: Max Location: Omaha on Nov 23, 2007 at 05:49 PM
Okay, let's look at some of the lessons we've learned from all of this. First, just because you put in a lot of hours at work doesn't mean you're good at your job. It just means you put in a lot of hours. Second, when someone is constantly telling you what a good job they're doing, they're not trying to convince you, they're just lying to themselves because they aren't hearing it anywhere else. And, finally, don't make your frind your defensive coordinator. It will be interesting, after these clowns are gone, to hear what was really going on in the program. I mean, the offense was maybe a little above average, but when you score 51 points, you should win the game. How bad is Cosgrove? What caused the meltdown? He was, at best, mediocre before this season. But this year the wheels fell off completely. It's hard to imagine how much more damage Callahan and Cosgrove could have done to the program than if they were trying to destroy it. How did these guys last so long as coaches (anywhere)?

Posted by: stan Location: omaha on Nov 23, 2007 at 05:36 PM
Joe, Council Bluffs...you have a way with words....NOT. Tackle through the turf?

Posted by: chris Location: omaha on Nov 23, 2007 at 05:26 PM
Who cares about college football anyway? It's not like these are our hometown kids - that's why it's easy to be a fair-weather fan. When you're watching a hometown high school team, you're supportive because you're invested in the players. You share a sense of community and tradition. But what do I care if a kid from Florida can't hold onto a ball? Support high school football. College football is just pro breeding grounds.

Posted by: Henry on Nov 23, 2007 at 05:14 PM
Happy Holidays!!! Now you get to watch everyone else play. There is more to life than Football. It funny how most of you blame the coach for the team's mistakes, grow up and accept the fact that they lost and it IS ONLY a game. The reason why you have a University to start with is for LEARNING, NOT FOOTBALL or BOWL GAMES!

Even tho that the Huskers lost and we all know that Callahan will probably get fired, everybody knows that the huskers will come out of there slump and put together a powehouse team again, but it will take time..they do have some solid recruits on rivals.com and i think Tom Osborne will bring an a experienced and well known coach to bring back the Huskers of the 90's....5-7 not so good....Next Years Prediction:8-4..Go Huskers !

Posted by: Gino Location: Omaha on Nov 23, 2007 at 04:11 PM
Time to drink the Coolaid Husker fans you're not going to a bowl game! Ha!

Posted by: Doug Location: Omaha on Nov 23, 2007 at 04:10 PM
I think the loss today and the fact there there is no bowl in the future should make Dr. Tom's decision even easier. I know Dr. Tom will conduct a professional meeting as well as looking at the whole situation from a practical point. Just a curious question for the Husker faithful. What if Dr. Tom does not remove the coaching staff and gives them another year?

Get that coaching staff out of there. They need to start next year out with a whole new staff. It was a good effort from ther players but they need the right coaching staff calling the plays in. Maybe next year will be different. I am still a husker fan, even though the out come of this year stinks. GO HUSKERS.

Chernobyl-skers. Our defense fell apart in the second half like slow roasted pork. There's nobody in college football who lets a team back in the game like Nebraska. And I might point out there were fewer offsides penalties in all the high school playoff games combined than NU had against Colorado.

Before Coach Callahan's decison in the fourth quarter to punt rather than go for a first down when it was fourth and three, I was in favor of keeping him on the program. After that decision, which should have been a no brainer, it didn't look like he played to win. Colorado ran off six critical minutes, which was half the time left in the game.
