    Pederson Out Save Email Print
    No interim AD announced

    A | A | A

UNL Athletic Director Steve Pederson has been fired. That word came Monday afternoon in the aftermath of yet another rocky performance and lopsided loss by the NU football team on Saturday.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced he asked UNL Athletic Director Steve Pederson to step down from the post he has held since January 2003. Perlman said he believes Pederson is no longer positioned to move the Athletic Department forward.

Perlman says it will cost at least $2.2 million to buy Pederson out of his contract.

"This is personally a very sad day for me," Perlman said at an afternoon news conference. "There is no joy in my heart for having to do this but I thought it was the best thing to do.

"We are of course disappointed about the progress in our football program. Steve has done many positive things for Husker athletics during his tenure but I think only new leadership can objectively assess the state of our program and make the decisions necessary to move us forward," Perlman said.

Pederson's contract was renewed for five years at the end of July.

"You make the best decision you can with the information you have," Perlman said. Since then, Perlman says he has noted a decline in morale in the Athletic Department, and growing concern about retention of key personnel.

Perlman said he will immediately initiate conversations to identify an interim athletic director with full authority to assess the state of the Athletic Department and its athletic programs and to make any decision necessary to advance those programs. He did not announce an interim AD during his news conference. He did indicate his intention to consult with a national search consultant to begin the process for selection of a new permanent athletic director.

"It is not clear how long such a process will take or its precise form. It is important it be done expeditiously but thoughtfully," Perlman said.

"The selection of Steve Pederson in 2003 as athletic director was widely thought to be the only clear choice because of his experience, his roots and his knowledge of our traditions. I know Steve made the decisions he thought best for the interests of the program and the university. I am disappointed that I had to come to this decision."

Former Husker and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers says now is the time to reclaim the tradition of Nebraska football.

He says, "It has been rather challenging for the former players to be part of the program. I really do think that the glue that can bring it back together would be Tom Osborne."

Former Husker Clinton Childs agrees that Husker tradition has taken a back seat in the Pederson years.

He says, "You see so much tradition that has gone completely out of the window."

As for rebuilding that, Childs says, "The kids need to realize that, you know, the university wasn't solely based upon Steve Pederson. And that they're there to try to rekindle the tradition that had already been down there a long time before those guys had gotten there."

Perlman said he would consult with Osborne about the direction of the athletic program, but stopped short of saying he would offer Osborne the interim athletic director's job. Osborne now teaches a business leadership course at the university and is a consultant to local college athletic programs.

Osborne said Monday night that he had not been asked to become interim AD.

"When I know that's even a possibility, I'll be able to sit down and tell you what I know. I haven't talked to anyone yet," Osborne said.

I'm gladthat steve pederson was fired now.because pederson fired Frank Solich in 2003 and fired Bo pelini. why Pederson fired blame on Frank and Bo Pelini. because Bo Pelini was best defense in Lsu today. because Bo Peleini worked hard best defense as he don't give up to keep proud of husker team. that why Peterson was careless was no pro man.I am glad that Tom Osborne was best husker .that was sad that bussiness lost husker. that they hope to support husker will work out best team future. I hope that can we still get Bo Pelini???because he was strict make good player. I born in Nebraska as hope that support GO Go husker.that hope not happen again.

To all who think it is just a game: A successful Husker football program brings in millions of $$$ to NU which provided scholarships for other sports which are not financially able to support themselves, like swimming, giving many kids opportunities to get an education. What wonderful opportunities the Walk On program produced. Under Pedersen's watch, the $ has declined, & many scholarships were cut. The $ just wasn't there anymore. It is true that televised games have decreased since the Solich era. Secondly, everyone acknowledges how great T.O. is. Why do some of these people second guess his decision to put F.S. in as coach? F.S. was a good choice, but we will never know how that would have turned out, thanks to Pederson. I think some of the fans were just plain spoiled by having a team as consistenly winning as NU was. No one really appreciated how good we were during F.S. era, until after he was gone & we got rolled over by div. II teams we never even heard of.

i TOTALLY agree with John. This is a sad event for sports fans but who cares when we have family members over in Iraq dying and we get this trash for 10 minutes of the news. Get to the real stuff people and save this for the Soap Opera Digest!

This gets more attention than gang violence, this is just one of the many things wrong with Nebraska SPORTS OVER LIVES... WAKE UP.

I'm not a Husker fan, but living here my entire life, its hard not to know what is going on with the team. Personally, I don't think it is fair to put pressure for Tom to come back and 'save the day.' Granted, he was an excellent coach and has done numerous things for this state, on and off the field, however, Bill is still there and its not fair to him to bring in someone to 'oversee' his every move. NU signed the contract, now they have to deal with the consequences. Let Bill finish out his season and start focusing what the next step is.

Perhaps his consolation is walking away with a mere 2.2 mil!!!! I enjoyed is "gracious" statement as he smugly deposits his check...ahem!

To John from Omaha, you must enjoy sitting in front of your tv watching and listening to all that garbage....ie...global warming(farce)and the rest of the violence in iraq, gangs, illegals(that are destroying our country). Everything bad in our country and world.....Get your head outta the sand and enjoy life in Nebraska because you're starting to sound like the boulderites that live here in Colorado. The only thing that is askew is your couch potatoness sitting there and watching it all, do something about it, instead of writing back to this post a crying about something that you don't care about!!

Posted by: Steve Location: Omaha on Oct 16, 2007 at 11:22 AM
To John from Omaha...if your concerns about the war, global warming, gangs, etc. are the most of your worries, YOU'RE the one with your priorities that are askew ! This change is due !

Posted by: DD Location: Littleton,Co on Oct 16, 2007 at 11:20 AM
Later Peedy, now we have 1/3 of our problem solved. Once we are rid of the Cal/Coz factor, we can get back to rebuilding what these few tore down. And as for Dan Cook crying that he's not going to give the school another dime, I say, SEE YA LATER !!! We don't need your kinda people's money anyway.....someone who turns tail and runs like that are better off not being associated with Nebraska anyway.

Posted by: Larry Location: Omaha on Oct 16, 2007 at 11:20 AM
Let's keep in mind the only opportunity that Tom Osborne had to select a head coach was when he selected Frank Solich. Not a sucessful choice. Hope he can do better with the next one.

Posted by: John Location: Omaha on Oct 16, 2007 at 11:08 AM
This is sad. We have global warming, the war in Iraq, gang violence, illegal immigration, and this is what gets the most attention. No wonder our country is going to heck in a handbasket. Our priorities are all askew.

To Mike J., it has nothing to do with everyone thinking Tom is a God, but he was a WONDERFUL coach who has integrity and a great attitude. People from other schools even recognized that. YOU can't take that away from him.

I think today at the 12 press confrence will Bill Callahan I have a feeling that he will be saying that the Def. Cord. has been fired. They will give Callahan two maybe three more games to prove himself and if he looses them all or looses 2 BADLY he will be gone. I think Tom would be a great asset to the athletic department. He knows what he is doing. Everyone likes him. So it wouldn't be a bad idea. Lastly I was listening to the radio yesterday and heard that they seated the 97 coaches and team at the OSU game at the top part of the new section during the game. The person inchage of where they sat was go figure Pederson. That is appaling!! The 97 team was named one of the top 10 college teams ever by espn. That is terible!

The way and the timing that Frank Solich was fired left a bad taste in the mouths of most Nebraskans. Steve Pederson had to prove that he made the right decision. Instead, he rode into town with guns drawn and shot himself in the foot.

Posted by: Kevin Location: Council Bluffs on Oct 16, 2007 at 09:09 AM
Management style issues? How absolutely stupid do they think Cornhuskers are? Ohh I know the answer to that one.... So in July 2007, when his contract renewed there was no issue with management style after 4 years. But in just a short 10 weeks it COMPLETELY changed?

Posted by: Susie Location: Omaha on Oct 16, 2007 at 08:53 AM
It's always sad to see someone go, but in some cases, it's for the best. I just hope to never see the fans leave a game at halftime ever again! Tradition went out the window with Pederson, but Loyalty went out the window when "you" walked out. These kids need "our" support now more than ever! GO BIG RED TILL I'M DEAD!

Posted by: Ken Location: Omaha on Oct 16, 2007 at 08:48 AM
Come on people, why is this just a couch or defensive coordinator thing. Who actually executes these plays. Maybe they should shake up some of these players. Just because the coaches call the plays, it's the players who execute them. There were alot of good plays in saturdays game and some where the ball was right in the players hands and then, ooops it slipped. Coaches fault? Rattle some players cages. Take them out of a game. Put someone in there that wants to make something of himself. Look at everyone involved in the game to include the players. You want to come to Nebraska to play, then play like a HUSKER.

Posted by: Matthew Location: Omaha 186th Q on Oct 16, 2007 at 08:40 AM
I personally believe Perlman needs to go also. He approved the extension and NOW after a few months, he finds out "ok.....Steve doesn't manage well". This kind of stuff doesn't creep up and bite you in the the butt like that. It was there before and he didn't care. For the football fans....guess what we are going to a "normal" team for many years to come. You can't sustain the success that Nebraska did forever. Look at Penn State (since ~1997), the Florida schools (during this decade), Notre Dame (recently), USC (80s and 90s), Oklahoma (90s) they all go through rough patches. Its life, and its good for football. Give it time, the ship will right itself. Nebraska took 23 years to win another championship, and 9 years in between just playing for one. It may happen underneath Callahan, it may not. There are bigger things to worry about in life, then what goes on in Lincoln. Take three hours out of your saturday and help someone. Thats better than football.

Posted by: Whole Picture Location: Omaha on Oct 16, 2007 at 08:36 AM
All you see is the football team. You need to look at the whole school. Perlman needs to stay where he is at, he makes it so we have the academics for our athletes. The AD is in charge of the sports. Keep Perlman, TO for the sub AD, and Stop talking about Bo Pelini and Gil Turner. They do not have what NU needs right now. Be a true Husker fan and look at what is best for everyone. There are a lot of unpaid buildings on that campus built for these teams. We need to get our fan base back and donors back in the game as well. Football isn't the reason Steve Pederson is out. It might be 20% of the reason. This is the start to something great!! The road to recovery is in full strength now.

    Posted by: d Location: OMAHA,NE on Oct 16, 2007 at 08:20 AM
Hello!!!! If football is a way of life here then you people are pathetic!

Posted by: Jarbeau Location: Bellevue on Oct 16, 2007 at 08:07 AM
Disgraceful and embarrassing are the two best words to describe Nebraskans. With all of the states problems, this is the issue that everyone can rally behind? Get real people!

Posted by: Mike J. Location: omaha on Oct 16, 2007 at 07:48 AM
Okay for everybody out there that thinks Tom would be a great AD. I have an even better idea for all you cry baby fans who can not handle getting beat up and our being slaughtered. Why not have him be a coach again or even better yet why not just cloan him so you will have him for ever? Oh yeah another thing good thing Tom couldnt win the bid to be governor otherwise he wouldnt be able to accept this posistion when they GIVE it to him on the silver platter. Since after all to all you Husker Nation people he is GOD....

Posted by: Sue Location: Lincoln on Oct 16, 2007 at 07:03 AM
Good riddance to Mr. Pederson...he got what he deserved! (What goes around, comes around, i.e. his firing of Coach Solich) What the NU FB team needs now is a new head coach and a new defensive coordinator that can instill MOTIVATION and the attitude of "YOU GOT TO WANT IT TO WIN IT" in our FB players like they had back in the Devaney and Osborne eras. Our lack of good FB coaches who REALLY care about our players and football traditions here in Nebraska have gone by the wayside...big time! We have all this new high dollar expensive equipment and brand spanking new facilities around the football stadium, but it isn't proving a darned thing...just that the University knows how to spend big money without truly caring about the players and what the players are supposed to be learning in the choices they made to come to Nebraska... The team needs SMART and MOTIVATED (not by money) coaches to get our boys back where they need to be and where they should be - winning once again! GO HUSKERS!

Posted by: Linda Location: Papillion on Oct 16, 2007 at 06:38 AM
Steve Pederson's contract was renewed in July and after over 4 years as director and you couldn't see that the all mighty Husker football team wasn't going anywhere. To buy out his contract will cost 2.2 million and possibly 4 million for Callahan's contract. They talk about tradition. The state of Nebraska's tradition is spending money foolishly.

Posted by: J on Oct 16, 2007 at 06:35 AM
Steve - you just said that Tom Osborne should be both Athletic Director and Chancellor.. that is never ever going to happen. Be realistic. And our tv revenue didn't drop since Callahan has taken over, we have been on tv just as much this year as we were when Solich was coaching.

Posted by: Andrew Location: Omaha on Oct 16, 2007 at 03:12 AM
Perlman had to fire Pederson and it wasn`t thought out for a week as he states. The reason he was fired is because people were calling for his job as well, so he thought I better fire Pederson and take the focus off of my mistakes.

I was born and raised in NE and am forever a fan of BIG RED football. I grew up watching great Husker football teams, starting with going to see Johnny Rodgers play, and continuing through the T.O. era until leaving NE in 1995. A change needed to be made in this program, and perhaps more changes still will be made. It has been painful as a loyal fan to watch them struggle so much in recent years. I agree with another comment made that we need to bring back the "Spirit of BIG RED" and the "Blackshirts." We need to show somepride and emotion on the field on both sides of the ball from the players and coaches. They need to get "fired UP." And the fans in the stadium need to yell a little louder in support of BIG RED, win or lose! I know too well, the dead silence in the stadium when we are losing and the players know it too! This isn't going to be a quick fix. Someone needs to help motivate these young men to get this program back on track. Go-Big-Red ..all the way from Henderson/Las Vegas

2.2 million gone, but how much will be lost when we don't go to a bowl game this year. How much money has been lost by not going to a BCS bowl the last three years?

Posted by: Steve Location: Reno on Oct 16, 2007 at 12:30 AM
    1. Pitt was happy to get rid of Pederson. 2. Whoever initiated and coordinated the hiring of Pederson should be fired also. Pederson was allowed to destroy one of the greatest programs ever. 3. It will take years to get back to the level we were at prior to Pederson and Callahan era. Recruiting, TV revenue, etc. etc.----all lost. 4. Callahan and his staff need to be eliminated as soon as possible so we can save what little is left and begin to rebuild the program. 4. If Tom Osborne would take the job he would be my number one choice as AD. He should be allowed to proceed as he thinks best. Mr Perlman should step aside and let Tom Osborne handle it. I am sure Tom would be committed to making the University and all its programs the best they can be.

im glad that steve pederson was fired now they need to fire bill callahan and name turner gill the new head coach of the huskers the huskers belive in tradition i think steve pederson made a mistake when he fired frank solich back in 2003 that was the beganing of the end for the football program and the other mistake was hiring raiders former head coach bill callahan with those two they took away the option play which has worked for the huskers offense to go with a trick play the only thing will fix the program back up is next get rid of callahan and name turner gill as the next head coach of nebraska i belive turner gill will bring back tradition back to the big red

Dear Rachel, Maybe you didn't grow up in Nebraska, but if you have issues about funding for our education programs please keep in mind that the income from all athletic programs funds many our the universities educational costs. Besides, Husker football is a way of life. Charlie McBride once said that the work ethic of the team reflects that of the entire state. It is a way of life, and to take that a way would be detrimental, not just to the unviersity as a research 1 institution, but also to the state of Nebraska.

Posted by: Victoria Location: Nebraska on Oct 16, 2007 at 12:20 AM
I would like to remind everyone that the new AD will have more sports to oversee than simply football. We need to continue to recruit excellence in other sports if we want to stay at the top of the Big 12 race across the boards... I know our football team has issues, but can we really blame ALL of them on the guy who does the hiring?? I'd say blame someone who's more directly involved with the players at Memorial Stadium and then you'll find the root of the problem.

Posted by: Dave Location: Social Circle, GA on Oct 15, 2007 at 11:28 PM
Don't celebrate too much. NU had better have a plan put together to keep their recruiting class together. I think Tom would help keep them together. If NU is going to replace the staff they need a quality person in place as soon as the season is complete.

Posted by: Garey Location: Chicago on Oct 15, 2007 at 11:04 PM
This firing had to come first before the Husker derailed football porgam can be righted and move forward again...and I applaud the "powers" that forced it NOW. Waiting and delaying was just going to make the process more prolonged and painful. For instance, getting rid of Cooper at Ohio State was a great example of a long overdue course correction. Again, as a life-long Big Red fan who has cheered so many Husker greats beginning with Bobby Reynolds, I commend the gutsy decision to right the ship sooner instead of later. Now I can bear up under some possible mediocre field performance while we work to reestablish Nebraska football at the top.

How many coaches can put us on top ten for upcoming recruites? Everyone is so concerned about firing callahan but the defense is what we need to be concerned about. Black shirts used to be a sacred tradition that everyone wanted to be someday. Now it is a joke. Before we get rid of another decent head coach we need to take a step back and look at the big picture...we need a new defensive coordinator.

Posted by: ..... on Oct 15, 2007 at 10:40 PM
I think it is AWESOME he is gone. I bet tomorrow at Callahans news confrence the Defensive cordinator will be gone. Give it to the end of the season and bye bye Callahan.

I laugh at all this outcry for heads from Nebraska fans just like the french revolution. I'm not in support of Pederson but you do have to point out that under him the basball team has been to the CWS, Academic All-Americans haven't ceased, and the volleyball team is the reigning National Champions. Is being the NU AD all about just football?!

Posted by: Tom Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 10:34 PM
We have just rid ourselves of one arrogant individual and there are at least 2 more to go. The only stupid thing I can think of we could do now is to hire another arrogant coach like BO. The only good thing he did was to not screw up the team that was handed to him by Frank. We need to step back and see who the new AD is and hope he has the sense and ability to hire coaches with loyalty and a sense of tradition along with the ability to instruct and communicate with these kids.

Posted by: Mike Location: McCook on Oct 15, 2007 at 10:33 PM
These are tough days for NU. I agree with the change but everyone needs to realize that this will probably not be a quick fix. The sad thing is that there is enough talent to be a top ten team. These guys are good recruiters but just forgot how to coach after spending long hours convincing top athletes to come to NU. I think Steve's intentions were good but arrogance took over and led him down a one way path. The alienation of supporters- whether it is former players, coaches, fans and the majority of top boosters appeared to have doomed him. We need to stay positive behind the program if we are true fans. OU went through several coaches after Barry was fired. The good thing is that the talent is there for the right coaching.

It would be great to get Osborne fully involved in the athletic department. It will be interesting to see if Callahan can handle the mentoring that would be available to him. It would also be nice to get some true red Husker blood back into the football program without politics and personal agenda's dictating every move.

Posted by: Randy Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 09:55 PM
Bye Steve - as you have found out, arrogance has it's price. What I do not understand is Chanceller Perlman's statement that he became aware of concerns with Pederson's management style in July and August (duh) however he still approved Pederson's new contract for FIVE years at the END OF JULY. This will cost the athletic department 2.2 million (remember they are still paying for the stadium renovations) AND whatever "deferred compensation agreements" mean. Good to know they are rolling in dough so they don't need my pittance donations any longer. That's not even considering buying out Callahan and Cosgrove's contracts (another 5 million) which look like more of a possibility the way this season is going. Finally Perlman made the statement that he was not contacted or urged by either the regents or the donors in making his decision. Do you believe that? DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT??? I've lost all faith in the decision making at the University of Nebraska.

I agree with Aaron. Couldn't 2.2 million be used for education rather than on improving a loser football team? I, too, hope the NU Huskers continue their HUGE losing streak!

It is a sad day when tradition is lost at Nebraska. There is so much history there. We need to get it back. The current coaching staff, do not get to comfortable with your jobs. The team, fans, and alumnist will not settle for anything less.

Pederson should have been skipping and doing cartwheels out to his car after being fired. I mean it's like winning a 2.2 million dollar lottery. We should all be so lucky.

Posted by: BW Location: Lincoln, NE on Oct 15, 2007 at 09:03 PM
Erin, are you aware that the football program PAYS for every other program at the University including education...Obviously, education is more important. Also, name one other institution that unites the people of this state and instills in them good values such as hard work and integrity.

Posted by: Brad Location: Papillion on Oct 15, 2007 at 09:00 PM
Pederson had to go. He fired Frank and now it's his turn, well deserved. He hired a loser head coach that put Oakland in turmoil. He's not a motivator. If you watch college football, you see teams win with emotion, IE Kentucky over LSU, Stanford over USC. We have none. Our new AD can clean up the mess by brining a Head Coach who can inspire and lead and a defensive coordinator who can get 11 guys to play as a team with emotion! Bring back Tradition!!

I think it is a DISGRACE to pay the FOOTBALL COACHES & Athletic directors SOOOO much money when they are cutting programs for the STUDENTS at the university & teachers aren’t paid well. I hope UNL goes on a HUGE losing streak...maybe you diehard crazy football people will wake up & figure out that EDUCATION is much more important than football. Enjoy paying this guy 2.2 MILLION to buy him out of his contract. Hopefully that is 2.2 million out of the FOOTBALL team’s budget....

Posted by: Avery Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 08:54 PM
We want Tommy Lee! That was about as stupid as the posts about firing Perlman. You guys do realize this is a university, right? Perlman has a lot on his plate right now and football is certainly not his top priority. He has buget cuts, etc. to worry about. And I'm pretty sure the board of directors feel the same way. These people are academics. They are in charge of running the school, not getting us into a bowl game.

It's good to see that Pederson's gone, but I'm sure that we hungry fans haven't had enough...some more cleaning house has to be done. Cosgrove for sure. On the other hand, perhaps, the Athletic Department could give Callahan a hand in selecting a new coaching staff. I think that with his recruitment abilities and surrounding himself with better coaches would improve things a bit. On the other hand, it's not too early to begin looking for a head coach replacement.

Mr. Cook can take his money and give it to the homeless if he is so upset about the firing. What an baby attitude to take when we are trying to build up what has been taken down at the start of this reign in 2003. I feel so sorry for Mr. Cook. Remove his name from the building and let him not enter the stadium. The rich doner is not a true Husker.

I think that this is a step in the right direction, Frank my not have been the best recruiter but he did bring the Bullocks brothers, some great kickers, some players with heart, players with great work ethic they may not have been 5 stars, but look at what we are getting out of top 10 recruiting classes losing seasons and blow out losses not to mention at home. Bo would be a great head coach, Cowler would be bad hire, he has sucked as a head coach everywhere he has been at, just look at Pitt. Get T.O. as A.D. Bo may come, Cosgrove has got to go regardless, he has our defense looking dumb. He hasn't had a great defense since he has been here Bo in 1 year did more with a lessly touted group of players then Cos has done with more (talent, speed, size, ability) The longer players are here on defense the worse they get examples: B. Rudd, Bullocks brothers, and many others that elude me at the moment. For Frank and his guys they must have been great coaches they got more out of "less" Stats.

Ive made some pretty unforgivable mistakes before and I can remember re-living those horrible memories day after day after day. And the painful thoughts of "If i could just go back and do it over". Im sure Mr. Pederson feels the same way, though im hoping he doesnt. I think it was time for a change, but understand hes still a person. Im sure he has a family that has to share the same burden. My prayers go out the them as they begin to embrace this change and also prayer that the Lord keeps me from similar circumstances in my future.

All comments right on point. However, the current team needs a couple things. Heart. Player leadership. Emotion. My thought is simple. I want to see Sam Keller take that arm band off. He's hiding something thats part of who he is and he thinks we're going to judge him because of it. The reason most people love this charismatic guy is the same reason he'd grab a few tattoos to honor those who he respects - CONFIDENCE AND PASSION. SAM - we're Nebraska - we'll love you either way - but be yourself. That move would be iconic because we respect why you wear it. But, be who you are - a confident leader who makes no apologies. Remove that arm band - I think you'll find that you and Nebraska football have very similar backgrounds and you'll be loved even more by the fans by trusting that you'll not be judged as you feel you may. Posters, can we please start this buzz? We need a gun slinger with an attitude / a swagger.. Do you all remember that word? SWAGGER? That dude has all the tools

Posted by: Jim Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:23 PM
Please stop with the Bo Pelini talk. The guy has never been a head coach. His defenses have a history of being shredded in big games at Nebraska and LSU. He has no ties to the tradition here. If hired, I can promise you he won't be here long before he moves on. Turner Gill should be the #1 pick.

Saw somebody say they felt bad for Pederson. You think he felt bad for Frank? Took them long enough to get him to pack up and go. Now lets get T.O. and our tradition and integrity back! Only the start--get rid of Callahan and his little buddy Cosgrove too for starters. WE WANT BO!!WE WANT BO! AND TURNER TOO! PEDERSON WANTED TO TAKE US OUT OF MEDIOCRITY! HE DID, HE THREW US INTO THE DEPTS OF IT!! ANYBODY HAVE BO & TURNER'S PHONE NUMBERS? CALL THEM TONITE! I PRAY THEY WILL COME BACK NOW THAT THE PERSON WHO HUMILATED THEM IS FINALLY GONE!!HOPEFULLY T.O. WILL BE ABLE TO GET THEM BACK!! AND BRING BACK OUR INTEGRITY BY CLEANING HOUSE BIG TIME!! FINAL COMMENT: WE WANT BO!!! GILL AND T.O. TOO! AND HURRY!!!! AND PLAYERS: WE DON'T BLAME U,YOU ARE GREAT. NOT YOUR FAULT. JUST HAVE HAD COACHES THAT DON'T KNOW HOW TO COACH. WE ARE STILL BEHIND OUR GREAT PLAYERS!! OH AND BTW: DID I MENTION?? WE WANT BO FOR HEAD COACH!! WOULD BE GOOD TO HAVE COACHES WHO KNEW WHAT A FOOTBALL WAS & HOW TO USE IT!

Hooray!!!!! Didn't think Pearlman had the guts to fire Pederson. Guess he actually realized he had an insurrection on his doorstep and needed to act quickly to protect his own hide. Also noticed that a large number of the so called knowledgeable Husker fans submitting comments, cannot even spell Steve Pederson's name correctly!! I think Dr. Tom is too smart to allow himself to be dragged into this quagmire, even though he appears to be the favorite of most Husker fans. Hopefully the AD position will be filled by an Ex-Husker familiar with the deeply seated concern and affection we all feel for BIG RED!! Where is Monte Kiffin when we need him?

Fahey beware! This is what happens when you have a public job and do not listen to your people. Petersen did not listen, did not revere tradition, became aroggant and corporate.

Posted by: Dan Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:09 PM
Let's get rid of Perlman! He owes the Nebraska taxpayers $2.2 million dollars!!! Better hold a bake sale buddy...It was either your incompetence in July or your lack of backbone in October (Husker "fans" always cry for blood after a few losses - you should know this and not offer 5 year contracts to any one higher then the janitor) that is costing us this huge sum of money. How many students could we educate for this $2.2 million? If this your best then you should either not be chancellor or you should pay the $2.2 million out of your pocket!

Posted by: Leo Location: Millard on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:09 PM
I don't think Pederson should have been fired. He did a great job raising all that money for the stadium expansions. We can rent him out to Fahey to get his new stadium built without raising taxes.Maybe we can recoup some of the 2.2 mil.

Posted by: Stephanie Location: Aurora, IL on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:32 PM
Stephanie, shame on you for giving our name a bad rap!!!! The players need our support right now!! The decision to fire Pederson is separate from the players and should remain so. To the boo-birds: You may feel that booing was your only option to express your frustration with the coaching staff but you couldn't be more wrong! You should be ASHAMED of yourselves for demonstrating such poor sportsmanship!!! That is NOT Husker tradition! I call upon all of the true Husker fans to stop the Husker wannabes by curtailing this type of behavior whenever it is witnessed! Go BIG RED!!!!!!

Posted by: Pat Location: Topeka, KS on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:19 PM
The point of someone else taking over the rest of the season is a valid one - could they do any worse than the coaching staff now? There are a huge number of former players available even if they knew it was only a short term gig. They probably couldn't do any worse than 45-14 against OSU and 41-6 against Missouri. This season is pretty much toast now anyway. I'm guessing based on some of the player's comments about not knowing what they are supposed to be doing that the defense is way too complicated for college. Same with the offense. West coast is a good concept but way too complex for kids who have to also attend classes and don't have 60-80 hours a week to live and breathe football.

I think that Pederson gone is a good thing. I think that T.O. for an interim AD is a viable option. Pellini will not come back to NE without being the head coach. Problem is that he's not head coach material, as a DC yes. Callahan has to go and Cos should never have been hired. Ron Brown should be back on the staff in some regard, he is a great coach, family man, christian, and great guy. He can motivate players and he is all about the players. That's what we need, someone all about the players. Scott Frost should be on the staff as well. I don't know who we could get for a head coach right now. Turner, Frank, Bo aren't the answer. Don't get me wrong I loved all of them, but we need a defensive minded coach. Defense wins championships! We need someone that will light a fire in our guys and put them in a position to win. To the players we all still love ya and are behind ya. Just go out and play for yourselves with heart. GO BIG RED!!!

Posted by: Carson Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:13 PM
It was an expensive mistake to correct, but 2.2 million may pale in comparison to what may be lost in Big Red revenue if our program is not returned to it's former glory. Pederson is just the 1st of 3 "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" monkeys to go. Callahan & Cosgrove - Pack Your Bags! Maybe fate didn't have Tom Osborne become governor, so he could restore NU's football program from the shambles that it has become. I will anxiously await the next news buletin: Callahan & Cosgrove Out - Osborne In! Come back where you belong Dr. Tom and return the respect, the pride, the diginity, and the team spirit the The Huskers again!

Did not quite see this happening at this point. I had ran out time after the OK state game. They needed to do something. will Bill be the next, Cosgrove, or both. Can we hear something for Coach Turner Gill??? From people I know on the inside more than me, there is not a collge atmosphere around memorial stadium, more of a Pro football atmosphere, the way practices are handled, and definitely not a emotional way of practicing. This is college ball and is a completely different game and attitude. As many of you have heard in college you play for the name on the front of the jersey and in the pros you play for the name on the back. I never did like his answers( or lack of an answer). Hopefully we can get back on track. I have never seen such a lack of motivation and emotion in a Husker team ever. They need Grant Wistrom and Christian Peter to come and start throwing around things in the locker room to get those kids' heads on the way a husker head should be on.

Pederson getting fired was the right thing to do. Next on the list; a phone call to Monte Kiffin to see what young energetic and innovative defensive coordinators are available. Callahan has another year to show that he has what it takes to shine in Big 12. I feel that Callahan has a head coach has the potential to make this team what it NEEDS to be. If not, get ready to sharpen that axe! We as "the best fans in the nation" deserve "the best coaching staff in the nation" PERIOD.

Ya know 80% of the Nebraska fans THOUGHT Solich should be fired. Given the information provided at the time who would not have hired an NFL Coach one year out of the Super Bowl. I don't blame Pederson for making that decision. The decision to through out the entire coaching staff was abismal. What's the message going to be if the ship doesn't get straightened out in the next couple of weeks?? Answer name Tom Osborne interim AD for one year. Let Callahan finish the year and dial up information for Boise, Idaho. Chris Peterson would be a perfect fit. I Hate WVU, Greg

Posted by: GR Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:43 PM
Everybody bags on Solich -- he was in the process of turning around his team from 7-7 to 10-3 when Pedersen fired him. We'll never know what he might have done if he and his coaches had been given another year. The fact that many of his recruits played major roled in Callahan's two winning seasons says something -- now that most of Frank's recruits are gone, you see what we're getting. I'm not suggesting the talent level is lower today, but I think the guys recruited by Devaney, Osborne and Solich often had the intangibles to compete and win. Solich, in his worst year, won 50% of his games. Callahan's record speaks for itself. I believe one thing -- if Pedersen hadn't deliberately avoided getting advice from Tom Osborne 4 years ago, Nebraska football would be much better off today. Now we have to move on -- Turner Gill would restore the tradition and boost the legacy launched by Devaney more than 40 years ago. Kudos to Perlman for today's move -- make some more good ones

One down, many to go. Callahan made it clear that the Husker tradition was the past and he wanted to make his impression on the program...well done....PATHETIC

If Harvey was truly the "last one" to know how bad things are in the athletic dept. then he is completely out of touch and should not be in the position to hire or fire anyone. His decision to extend Petersens contract will cost the athletic dept. 2.2 million. There were plenty of red flags as to Petersons performance. It is the job of chancellor to investigate these flags. He is obviously unapprochable and not open to feedback. He buried his head in the sand when the disent regarding Petersen began pouring in. He should be held accountable for this multimillion dollar mistake. If I was responsible for losing the company I work for $100,000 let alone $1 million due to lack of attention my head would roll nice guy or not. I don't think he should be treated any different then the rest of us just because he is in a higher income bracket.

It saddens me to think our football program has come to this; however, I do believe this is the first step toward solving the obvious problems in the football program, and hopefully will result in the return of football excellence that all fans have become used to. I agree with the decision made by Harvey Perlman, and look forward to a new permanent A.D. and the return to football excellence.

Texans for Nebraska support the players 100%. Look to what Texas Tech did a few weeks ago, they fired their Defensive Coordinator, look how great they played against A&M on Saturday. It's all about the leadership...

Posted by: Big D Location: Denver on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:55 PM
What was his comment? Just because someone was an athlete at Nebraska does not make them qualified to be an A.D. at Nebraska. Something like that.

What was Callahan claim to fame anyway..Oakland Raiders wanted him OUT! This was and is a BAD Hire...Let him go and be a great assistant coach...somewhere....

The primary lesson here is about losing the respect of your leaders and colleagues. This decision is not about football and impacts a great University, a good man and his family. If you are a true NU Fan you have to be there for the good times and the challenging. NU has all lot of areas to be so proud in the area of athletics. We have great students, accomplished athletes and some of the the very best fans in the world. Unfortunately there are also a large group of "football fans" sharing publically such ugly comments about a person they really don't know. Perhaps another lesson could be around casting stones. This public decision reflects a failure for all of us in the Husker Nation. We brought Steve in because he was the best AD with great creditials. He still is a good man and we should wish him the very best as he moves on. Are we such poor judges of character or talent? If so, who would want to come here if they see how we treat those we hire as winners? NU Proud

These players get motivation from coaches yes, but when your a player your a family on the field. We may not like what our parents say but we need to listen to them, this is what helps us learn, these young men are acting like teenage kids rebellious, and not respecting themselves thier fans and most of all thier coachs. i dont care if you dont like your coach, you repect him because you let everyone down when you act like a inconsiderate crybaby. I say put in the kids who stand on the sideline waiting to play for the NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS who want to play. Maybe the starters will understand its about RESPECT! The will to play the intensity to play. Its hurting themselves as well for what could be the NFL

Why have a press conference if you aren't announcing other changes? The statement said it all. Callahan and Cosgrove are still in? That won't change anything with way the Huskers play. If that's how it goes, fire just one guy, then keep Peterson and fire Callahan or Cosgrove.

As Big Red supporters, lets wear something red this week for our football team. Also, prayers for direction and guidance for the team. Let's move now that Pederson is gone - let's regroup and play football. Go Huskers!!

Peggy, I am a fan regardless if we win or lose. While we would prefer to win, we are fans regardless and do support our team win/lose/or draw. There are some fans that boo or leave the game. Those are not the same fans that will always support our beloved program. As I stated in another posting, Frank put us in the same boat we are in today. We can not beat a top 10 team. Not recruiting is what hurt Frank and the refusal to move to another system that will be the future of our program. I did not want Frank fired, however, he was not the man to lead our team into the future. We need a coach that will embrace the legacies that our team have achieved. Only then will we return to the winning ways. Until then, we are fans of the Huskers win/lose/or draw! GO BIG RED!!!!

Bring Bo back or bring Tom Osborne back, does anybody look forward in Nebraska, why not focus on hiring a head coach that has a winning program today..last I heard bo is still just a defensive coordinator.

Posted by: Kyle Location: St Louis on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:35 PM
To Peggy in Omaha, these people you speak of that have families and lives that you seem to feel so sorry for, make millions of dollars. I don't imagine anyone who gets fired will have a difficult time taking care of their families if they never worked again. In the real world, if you are not successful at your job, you lose it. Thank goodness it has began. I was concerned we would have to wait until the end of the season. Unfortunately, since Cosgrove is as inept as Callahan, there is not much of a chance of Callahan leaving until December.

I hear Bill Cowher availible, he would definately bring the fire back to the the team & Fans... He just loves the game and he is all about tradition.

It is sad that Frank is not here at least in an athletic Dept. position. He deserves to be known around here as a great athlete and coach and person. Steve Peterson should have worked him out of the head coaching position with more respect. He may not have been the man to move us back to the days when Tom was here, but he did win 75% of his games. His staff that he put together was heading in the right direction though. With Frank as the head coach and Tom Rathman as the O.C. and Bo as the D.C. we would be in the top 10 now and heading to a BCS Bowl.

Amen!!!! A great day for Nebraska!! Finally some one is listening to the fans However a house cleaning is needed. My suggestion is let T.O. come back to save the day and also make him A.D. give him a year them move him to A.D. permenetly and bring back Turner Gill or Penelli

Thank you Adam, Bill is a fine coach it people like spence who havent got a clue they just wine when things go sour. You cant always have a mind set like that.

It is not whether you win or lose but how they play the game but nebraska now needs to do both. GO BIG RED

Posted by: dewcat Location: deweese on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:19 PM
Well SPENCE since you are so knowledgable about what people inherit, like callahan with gruden, same can be said when MCBRIDE left!! or when Tom left and Frank got his recruiting class, if Callahan or frank or pellini or the likes were not good coachs they would have not got as far as they did. Maybe u should be the AD since you know so much.

Miracles do happen. I'm Pederson has done many wonderful things, but, I don't know if he ever really fit in our program they way we wanted him too. Husker fans take their football very seriously, we have a VERY strong loyalty to our boys. GO HUSKERS!!!!!

Posted by: Sue Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:16 PM
Stephanie, I notice you are from North Platte...are you a relative of Steve P?? That would be the only reason I could imagine anyone putting any blame on the players...SHAME ON YOU!!!!!

Posted by: Adam Location: West Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:11 PM
To the players: Your fans have and always will be behind you! To Bill Callahan: You are doing fine with the offense! To Harvey Perlman: Thank you for listening to the fans... now we only have one more we want gone and one we want back! To Kevin Cosgrove: Start Packing! To Bo Pelini: We are sorry for Steve Pederson not giving you a chance. Remember our chant for you at the end of the game? Wouldnt it be nice to hear that every week? Please come back!

Posted by: Bart Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:10 PM
3 coaches who know how to coach-Tedford from Cal, Steve Sarkisian from USC or Lane Kiffin from the Raiders. Think about it! Just getting an ExHusker is not necessarily the answer.

Posted by: Eric Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:09 PM
I don't know why all these people want Bo Pellini as head coach. His Alamo Bowl performance was uninspirational at best. He lost my respect when he allowed that thug Richie Incognito to remain in the game after 2 flagrant personal fouls that stalled 2 separate offensive drives. When the blood lust is satiated by whatever firings happen, ask yourselves this Nebraska fans: What will you do next year if the same thing happens again? Will you support the young men that sacrafice their bodies for your self esteem, or will you call for their heads on pikes in front of the stadium?

Posted by: dec on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:09 PM
    good fire him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Spence Location: Omaha on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:05 PM
Dewcat you shouldn't put messages on the board if you dont know what you are talking about. Callahan is one of the worst coaches in football. The Raiders team you are talking about was Grudens team. Which he coached against in the Superbowl and got killed because Callahan was to stupid change the playbook. The Raiders havnt recovered from Callahan being there...

Posted by: Fred Location: Fremont on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:05 PM
What do Pederson or Callahan care anyway--they both just signed 5 year contracts, they're wealthy men. They'll just go "bye bye, see ya!" with a smile on their face (permasmile for Stevie)and their wallets fat. Too bad so sad Nebraskan's. We're rich and you no longer have a football program. Go VOLLEYBALL!!

The writting was on the wall when Pederson was hired, he led a ONE man crusade to hire the new football coach...that in it self is wrong. His hire was Bill Callahan who in 4yrs is 5-6, 8-4, 9-5 and currently 4-3 with the possibility of losing out. We have NEVER seen such poor consistency in our beloved football team, thank you Harvey Pearlman for stepping up to the plate...why did we give 5yr extensions to Pederson and Callahan? the writting was on the wall, lets get back to the prominence that we all so eagerly crave. GO BIG RED!!!

Backwards is not the way to go. The Solich program would've kept NU a Div II level program for years to come, no better than the tandem of Callahan and Cosgrove. The new AD, even an Interim AD, will need to look far beyond the end of the season. Pelini may be a possibility, but NOT as a Defensive Coordinator; he already has that job, at a much higher rated program. If Bo would even accept such a position with NU after the way he was uncerimoniously dumped by Pederson, it would have to be a Head Coaching position. He's ready, and I believe he would be there for years to come. Dr. Tom as an AD, even Interim AD, would have an IMMEDIATE positive impact.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:01 PM
I am not sure if Pelini is the right guy, how about Bill Cohwer as head coach, or Rich Brooks

Stephanie, We have the talent to be good, if not a superior team. You should never blame a student for doing what they can. The responsibility of the coaching staff to motivate the kids (who are not being paid to play). If you blame the kids for playing their hearts and souls out for a coaching staff that couldnt stop anything, then you need a real reality check. I only hope that you are kidding when you blame those kids. GO BIG RED!!

Posted by: John Location: Iowa on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:57 PM
Next, Pederson's cronies, then the FB staff shake-up. Nebraska needs HEART!! That's what we had with Bob, Tom, and Frank. Frank's only problem was lack of recruiting and innovation. Bring back the pride of Ne sons playing for the big red. This has and always will be inspiring for the players and the fans. We've lost that.

Reading through the comments so far I need to defend a few things: Frank Solich was an amazing person and he was a good coach. He was an inspiration to work with indirectly. He was wrongly let go and obviously his follower might have been the wrong choice. Steve Peterson is a good person outside of the job, he has done well getting/keeping some of the other programs running well, but just not when it comes to football. The fact that people continue to "threate
