KANSAS CITY, Mo. Nebraska-Omaha linebacker Shaquil Barrett was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Defensive Player of the Week on Monday by the conference office and a panel of SIDs.
Barrett reached double digit tackles for the second time this season, recorded a sack for the second straight game and blocked a field goal in UNO’s 42-10 victory over Missouri Southern on Sept. 25. He blocked a Dallas Herndon 34-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter with UNO up 7-3. The Mavericks scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive to take a 14-3 lead.
Barrett helped the UNO defense, which had struggled against the run through its first three games, hold the Lions to a season-low 129 yards on the ground. Missouri Southern entered the game as the top rushing offense in the MIAA averaging 257.3 per game and was held under 200 yards rushing for the first time all season.
The true freshman is second on the team with 27 tackles (15 solo and 12 assisted) and ranks 11th in the MIAA in tackles. He is also tied for 11th in the conference with two sacks.
The Mavericks (1-3, 1-1 MIAA) return to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 for their Homecoming game when Emporia State University (4-1, 2-1 MIAA) visits Omaha for a 1 p.m. kick-off.
