Speed Zapper: Speeders on 38th & Cass After A Dangerous Crash

More Video...

Neighbors near 38th and Cass have a lot of questions. Chief among them: What does it take to slow down speeding drivers?

One week ago, a speeder damaged several parked car before taking out a fence and driving straight into a home. The crash left a car totalled, several more damaged, and a home with visible damage to its exterior walls and foundation. Days later, neighbors say the problems continue.

38th & Cass

The Speed Zapper crew was back at the site of the original accident this week; speeding was still an issue.

"I'd hate to have them hit one of the kids," said Rich Reed, a homeowner whose car was damaged during last week’s wreck.

Neighbors banded together to get a speed bump put in on their street even before the crash. Most say this likely wouldn't have stopped this particular crash, but now they're even more hopeful that they'll get one. The petition has been signed and city workers had equipment out earlier this year to measure the traffic flow. They're still waiting to hear back on whether they'll qualify.

As for the speeders the WOWT 6 News Speed Zapper saw, several cars were caught driving over the speed limit. The fastest was 37 miles per hour, which is 12 miles per hour above the posted speed limit.

40th & Paxton

One viewer tipped us off to issues on 40th Street, near Paxton. It didn't take long on a Thursday morning to catch morning commuters driving over the speed limit.

Three separate cars registered on the Speed Zapper as driving 42 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone, which is 12 miles per hour above the posted limit.

121st & Fawn

Our final stop this week took us to 121st Street at Fawn. It's a quiet neighborhood. Despite very few cars driving, one driver managed to stop right next to the WOWT 6 News camera before making a turn and proceeding to drive 34 miles per hour, nine miles per hour over the speed limit.
