Speed Zapper: Open Campus Lunches

OMAHA New research shows that fewer schools are opting to let students leave campus for lunch.

In Omaha, a handful of schools still allow an "open campus" during school lunch. At Millard Public Schools, high school seniors are allowed to leave during their 30 minute lunch break.

The WOWT 6 News Speed Zapper crew tracked speeds before and after lunch-time traffic to see if issues were apparent. More people on the road made for a riskier situation, but the overall speed didn't seem to change.

The top speed before seniors who were let off-campus was a 56 mile per hour speeder on 144th street. During lunch hours, the top speeder caught leaving the school was the same: 56 miles per hour or 11 miles per hour over the limit.

A handful of students were caught driving five to six miles per hour over the limit, but compared to the speeds tracked before the students were let out for lunch there wasn't a major fluctuation.
