Speed Zapper: 18th & Vinton

A Speed Zapper request took us to the area of 18th and Vinton.

This time it was a group of businesses that say the speeding is out of control.

If you're headed eastbound from 18th and Vinton to 15th, for safety reasons, the speed limit is at 20 miles per hour. That's driven partly because of sharp turns in the road.

Larry Ferguson, of Ferguson Studio Photography, says a lot of drivers aren't keeping their pace that low. "It's really dangerous, just not only for the children, but it's dangerous for the adults because the car traffic is moving so fast," he says.

It's an area businesses want to be pedestrian friendly. There are a lot of walkers.

Mix that with dangerous speeds, sharp curves, and blind spots, and you've got trouble.

Many speeders weren't quite 10 over, but close. We saw several hitting the 29 mark.

The average speed was a little over at 23 miles per hour.

The highest speed was 38; 18 miles per hour over the limit.

Kevin Brown of Capitol Bindery says it's speeders like that who cause a lot of accidents. "We had a car get totaled just right on the bend here. He didn't turn. He pushed the car hard enough to slide it across the street, and basically just totaled the car," he says.

The results were sent to the Omaha Police Department.
