Gotta change the way I think!
Gotta change the way I think!

A | A | A

Well its day two and all is well. Got up went to the gym did 30 min. on the elliptical and 45 in the pool. I am so encouraged by all the support I am receiving in this process.

Maggie my Alegent Health Heart & Vascular Institute Exercise Physiologist e-mailed me yesterday I was excited to hear from her. We'll talk on the phone tomorrow good thing too because I already have some questions. Jayme George from the Heart Association answers my E-mails so fast it's almost scary. Its not scary it's great and I feel very very special and encouraged. We are having a great time with the FlipShare from Rockbrook Camera. I can't wait to upload some great video. Thank you all.

What have I learned so far? Well, since Saturday I have taken to heart everything that was said to me by the Heart & Vascular Institute team. This lifestyle change is not just a change in my actions but a definite change in the way I think about everything!

While on this quest to get the "bad" food out of the house and replace it with "good" healthy food, my husband and I who imagined ourselves pretty good shoppers have found that we do not know how to shop at all. We are so used to going straight to all the unhealthy, processed, cheap food that last night when we went to get some things we found ourselves wandering around the store like aliens from another planet who knew nothing about grocery shopping at all. It was frustrating to me and I am so used to being in a hurry that I almost quit and went back to my old ways. Can you imagine only day two and I was ready to give up! Not because I was hungry and wanted to eat a burger or something but because I didn't know how to shop for healthy enjoyable meals.

I'll come back to the grocery store in a minute. As you all know I am a pastor and on Wednesday nights we have a bible study that I teach. Coincidentally enough we are studying Romans chapter 12. We are currently on the first two verses that say this:

1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Romans 12:1-2

Well I can say right now I am not fully living up to this command! Spiritually maybe but certainly not physically. As I was swimming this morning I got to thinking….I really really have to change the way I think about everything. If I want to have a healthy body and a healthy life style I cannot copy the current fads and trends. A wonder pill, a hot workout video or a new super-duper exercise machine is not the answer for me…been there done that. I have to follow tried and true methods - exercising and eating to live not living to eat.

Anyway back to the store. I realized that I was not in a hurry and that if we took the time to find the new foods we were looking for the next time I come in the store it won't take me so long and I won't feel so dumb. I did buy a magazine on Saturday for ten bucks "101 Lite Chicken Recipes". I only found 3 that I like. I have also taken note that I have to clean out my spices and start all over again. These are areas that I really could use some feedback on. I covet your prayers for my mindset change and….I need some cheap easy healthy recipes guys please and thank you.

Blessings

Pastor Pat, one thing that will definately help is for you to remember not to let yourself get hungry, angry, lonely to tired. You are familiar with addictions and these are common triggers that lead to old behavior. Also try not to think about things you will NOT do such as, I will not eat sweets; instead think I will eat more fruits and vegatables. Continue to be positive and hang in there.

Pat, the first step to any kind of change is to get your mind in it. This is what I tell my patients when I ask them if they are ready to quit smoking. They may tell me that are ready to quit, but if they aren't mentally ready to quit and adjust their behavior. They will not be successful in kicking their nicotine addiction. The same can be said about food and eating habits. My husband and I are as guilty as anyone, we don't eat well and we don't exercise. This may be the perfect time to change! I'll keep you in my prayers! Stay strong and keep working towards your goals!

Pat, I know exactly how you feel. I'm used to shopping fast and for a bunch of snack happy kids. Time to change that. You're doing great!

I know what you mean. I went to the store yesterday and had to make myself take my time and only get what I needed for my health. I didn't get any snack food, only fruit, almonds, seafood, and hard cheeses. I treated myself to some philly cheese and crackers, which is more healthy than the white cheddar popcorn I wanted.
