Volunteer Firefighter Sentenced

The former treasurer of the Eagle Fire Department received probation for two Class I Misdemeanor convictions.

The Cassgram reports that 46-year-old Debra J. Armstrong was put on probation for 18 months.

Armstrong pled guilty to the misdemeanor counts of unauthorized use of a financial device as part of a plea agreement.

Chief Deputy Cass County Attorney Colin Palm said Armstrong "Abused the trust of her position" on the fire department and took department funds in small amounts over a five-month period for gas purchases and a camera. The thefts amounted to over $600.

He noted that a couple of Eagle Volunteer Fire Department members had written letters asking that she be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Adding to the problem, said Palm, was the fact Armstrong didn’t admit to the unauthorized purchases when first confronted.

He asked for some up-front jail time followed by probation. Armstrong had spent three days in jail following her arrest.

Defense attorney Julie Bear said Armstrong "has done everything she can to right the wrong." Restitution was made and Armstrong is undergoing counseling.
