Ben Gray is a Democrat running in the nonpartisan contest to represent District Two on the Omaha City Council
The political newcomer spent 30 years behind a television camera before his retirement and his decision to run for city council.
Gray says he has a vision for District Two.
"I think I have as good a grasp as anybody in politics right now and probably a better grasp than some," he said.
The candidate says poverty and violence seem to strike too commonly, mainly in north Omaha.
He said, "Violence exists because society has failed to do its job in educating and taking care of its most vulnerable citizens."
He says one way to combat the problem is to start by helping the unemployed and underemployed.
"We've got nearly 8,000 jobs in this city that are available right now," he said. "What we need is people to be trained for them and we need to step up and do that."
He says another way to help is to find ways to further invest in small businesses that are already anchored in north Omaha.
